I may be wrong but apart from Wigan, arent Oldham also called the Latics??
Or did I dream that up when thinking of John Sheridan in a thong??!

So who are the real Latics? And WTF is a Latic anyways???

Just a nickname for "Athletic" named clubs really. Oldham were just the first prominent Latic's I think.

Alot of teams have the word 'Athletic' after their name (Leeds is another) but dont use the term day to day.

Similarly alot of "Spanish/Portuguese" clubs use terms like Racing, Real (Royal), Deportivo, Sporting, Atletico etc but dont always use them in day to day use.
Benfica's full name is "Sport Lisboa e Benfica" but then you also have Sporting Lisbon who's proper name is "Sporting Clube de Portugal".

Its a throwback to a bygone age when clubs were formed to play a multiple of sports. In Spain, some still do, especially basketball.

Leeds...........???? Are you sure on that one? Havent they always been LUFC
Usually if you have united or rovers etc after your name you would not also have athletic or something
i know Celtics full name is actually "The Celtic Football Club Athletic Association"

Positive. Always been Leeds United AFC.

Actually 'wikipedia' says that it stands for 'Association'.

Theres no mention at all on the official Leeds website.

Any Leeds fans on here that can clarify this.

Im shocked. My brother (Leeds fan) lied to me all those years ago. Had the poster on his wall with the 1972 FA Cup winning team.

I only realised the other day the AFC stood for Association football club.
I always thought it was Athletic Football club!

Didn't Leeds United only become "United" during the Revie era though?

Like Swansea City was Swansea Town up to 1970 or so.

They were called Leeds City, but that was long before the Revie ara.

Revie's lagacy was changing their colours from blues/white to all white to make them look like Real Madrid.

Did u know Juve got their colours from copying Notts County! True story
And did you know Notts County copied it after seeing Al Finucane and the Newcastle West AFC boys tour england in 1910 ;)
Juve won there first title wearing black/white stripes in 1905.

Originally they wore pink jerseys because they were sponsored by a newspaper.

The Notts County Juve link is very very real mate.
The NCW and Al Finucane in 1910 link may have a slight fabrication ;)

There's an all time pats fan who roars "come on Athletic!" at Richmond Park. apparently it used to be a popular thing...

Yeah, we knew it was a fabrication.

Al Finucane was on his first spell with Waterford then after years with Newcastle West;)

Oldham are thre real 'Latticks' (note the 'k' in the name). It's because Athletic spoken fast in a Lancashire accent sounds like 'Lattick' when said after Oldham.

Don't worry about the johhny-come-latelys in Wigan - Charlton tried to claim the 'Latticks' title year ago, but it just doesn't work with a Cockney accent... (maybe 'Flettick', not Lattick'...)

I always thought Latics was short for Palatics (i.e. drunks ) :D
