FAI and Sky change rights deal
The recent legislation put in place by the Irish Government which will allow all major Irish sporting events to be shown by the National broadcaster has forced BSKYB to change its deal with the FAI.
A Eur7.5m agreement was reached between the Irish football governing body and the British satellite broadcaster last summer for the rights to show all Ireland’s home games.
The Government were set for a lengthy court case after the new law disrupted Sky’s deal, while RTE had also initiated legal proceedings to ensure that they would have the right to show Ireland’s Euro 2004 games against Georgia and Albania in June.
But after negotiations with the governing body of Irish football, the British-based broadcaster now have non-exclusive rights to the matches, which shall be shown on Sky One.
RTE will now seek a High court injunction directing the FAI to hand over the rights to screen Ireland’s crunch Euro 2004 qualification double-header next month.
