That penalty in the 1988 cup final has to be the softest I've ever seen. I bet a few Derry fans are still bitter about that. Mental.

If there was one team which referees disliked more than Dundalk, it was Derry City.

Jeez there was some crowds at those games in the 70's and 80's.
My favourite clip here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vnx0oYR1hKg&feature=related)
The size of the support and the sheer volume from the crowd would have been special to be part of.

Yeah glad to see the referee's haven't changed much over the years. :p

Frigging hell, that should come with a noise warning. Any footage from the match?

Its looks even softer now, than it did at the time.
We froze big time on the day, it was our first major final. Dundalk, on the other hand, were a hugely experienced side with the likes of Malone, Eviston, Cleary, Wyse, O'Neill, Lawless etc etc.

Not really to be honest. The crowds at the Cup Finals in the 70's and 80's were no bigger than they have been for the last couple of cup finals. The 74 Harps final had a crowd of 14,000 - less than last year's final in atrocious weather in December.
The 1988 final between Derry and Dundalk had over 21,000 at it - the biggest cup final crowd in 16 years. Cork v Drogheda in 2005 had over 25,000.

Re the 1988 Final, it was a genuinely a blessing in-disguise that City didn't score, as not a word of a lie - we would have had the Irish version of Hillsborough. They had segregation for the final, and whilst there were Dundalk fans sitting down on their terracing in places - yes, genuinely - the crowd in the City half of the ground was absolutely jam-packed. Luckily I was at the top of the terracing on the side opposite the stand (whatever it's called), as it was physically impossible for people to move to get to the topilet, so blokes just p!ssed where they stood and it flowed down the terracing...

Sligo Rovers 2 - 7 Derry City from the end of the 1987/88 season.
Johnny Speak needed to score 3 goals to overtake Paul McGee as the League's leading goalscorer - he ended up scoring six!
This was our last game prior to our FAI Cup final vs Dundalk - as seen above.

This one isn't on YouTube, as its too big - a 25 min documentary on Derry City originally shown on Channel 4.
The coverage all relates to the climax of the 1988/89 season - including the 2-0 victory over Cobh Ramblers which won us the league that year

You'll need Apple Quicktime to view it.

Thanks for uploading this, I was at that match in the Brandywell (aged 11 and had a Pascal Vaudequin bowl-cut), don't remember much of the match other than it being a miserable night and we were relieved to escape with a draw.

It may not be classified as archive but an honourable mention to the bloke from Kildare County who posts their games on YouTube, including friendlies, together with a bakcing track.
Pure class.

I remember the congestion at that Derry/Dundalk final. It was scary. As there was not even room to stand you can imagine it at half-time when we tried to sit - I remember, and I'm serious, there was no room on the ground to put a fag out. I was near a very high, very strong pallisade fence and thought if Derry score we're all f****d.
Mercifully we did'nt look like scoring from what I remember.

As I hadn't then turned 18 quite yet and not allowed to drink, my Ma went to her only Derry City match in her life and somehow managed to spot me necking a can of LCL among the crowd behind the net. How do they do it?
