By the way, for those of you who dont know the Euro is the "official" unit of currency in Montenegro. I made the mistake a few years back when I went there from Belgrade and I changed my euros into Dinar (Serbian currency) only for me to have to change it back to euros when I got to Montenegro

Hi there!
My name is Petar and I am from Montenegro.
I just want to welcome you all to my beatifull country(I know it sounds like a phrase, but it is the fact).
For all off you who do not have a place to stay while in Montenegro I think that you will be able to find private appartments in coastal area(Budva,Bar,Sutomore,Petrovac). Also you can go to northern(mountines) part of Montenegro. There should be free bads at Mountain resorts Kolašin and Mojkovac(it is about one and the half hour away from Podgorica by train or car).I can give you bus schedules from Budva-Podgorica and vice-versa...,Bar-Podgorica...,train schedules Bar(Sutomore)-Podgorica and vice versa.Just write what you want to know.
I would not go around and harass people if I were you.It would most definetly end up badly on your behalf:D.
Concerning match-we will beat you,off course.
p.s.sorry for bad english.
Cheers!

Welcome Petar :) I have a question, will there be enough beer in Podgorica for us!!
Dont worry, there will be planty. If not there is allways votka, whisky, our domestic rakija(try it-ask for "loza")...:)
p.s. I dont think that you will like Podgorica, southern and northern parts are beatifull parts of Montenegro.Central part(where Podgorica is situated) is ugly except old royal capital Cetinje which is 30 minutes by bus away from Podgorica. There is hotel Grand situated and I think that they have spare rooms so you can go there if you dont find anything in Podgorica. But it may be more expensive. All in all I think that Budva is the best choice for you;).
Regards.

Between a Euro and 1.50 a pint, depending on the place. Not everywhere has draft but many do.

Someone might be able to help me. I am staying in Dubrovnik for a couple of days and then heading to Podgorica on the Tuesday, could someone advise me the best way to go. I heard that buses leave at 5 in the moring so would I be better off travelling to Budva and then on to Podgorica. If so does anyone have a useful website of train timetables or buses.
Need to have a plan as I leave on Sunday.
Thanks

anybody else miss out on Neil's bus from Dubrovnik & looking to go to Podgorica & back on Weds?
I was going to hire a car but the v windy roads in the dark don't look too appealing.
If anybody is interested in sharing a taxi or minibus let me know.

There is no train. There are numerous buses but they are designed for local use and tend to serve between local towns and you might have a few changes. I doubt you could find any reliable English language timetables. The best thing would be for a group to share the cost of a taxi. The drive isn't that difficult but I would not recommend the round trip from Dubrovnik in a day. All along I've been recommending people to use the Budva area as a base. Its a little over an hour, compared with the best part of 3 hours to Dubrovnik. A taxi from Budva to Podgorica can usually be negotiated at around €75-80 round trip but prices might be higher next week. From Dubrovnik I would reckon its quite a lot more. The car hire people at Dubrovnik airport are pretty enetrprising and at this time of year, very eager for business. Even if you don't want to self-drive, they might have suggestions.
From Dubrovnik it is actually better to go via Bosnia - up to Trebinje and then into Montenegro heading for Niksic. Really spectacular drive and the roads - and border crossings - are quieter. I came home that way yesterday and we made it from Podgorica to Cilipi Airport in about 2 hours 20.

Economy care hire http://www.economycarhire.com/ (http://192.168.1.226/exchweb/bin/redir.asp?URL=http://www.economycarhire.com/) have a good list of hire companies with prices for a small MPV carrying 5 from E208 for 4 days (in our case from Wednesday morning until Sunday morning). There is no charge for a second driver and it's insured for theft and collision. Border crossings in the car are no problem if you pay about E10 when you hire the car, and for an extra E7 you get cover for wheel damage etc. Comes in at a very reasonable E50 per skull if you have 5 punters. Now to get a designated driver!!

I hope everyone had a good evening. I hear reports that it was a good atmosphere around town. I hear there was some problems for local fans who were not allowed into their booked seats because the police wanted a buffer between the 2 sets of fans (they could have thought of that sooner). About 500 locals had to watch from the steps and other places. I think they were a bit ****ed over it but no trouble as far as I know.

Still here in Pod, heading to Budva for the day with a few foot.iers is that a word ha ha !! Bloody hot here, it says 38 degrees.
Long day yesterday with the bus from Dubrovnik. I hope you all got back ok late last night. Border checking was a nightmare and journey took 7 hours so sorry to all for that. Great atmosphere in the ground and the locals were and are friendly as far as I can see except for 1 incident that probably could happen anywhere from Tallaght to Kilrush to Watford.
Looking forward to a few days now in Monty and Croatia relaxing in the sea and checking out if the local here are as nice and as sexy as the locals in Mainz.

Budva is a stunning place. Old town as it's known. Women are stunning too. I was in Becici (sp?) 2 years ago. Lovely beach and prominade which is about 10 min taxi from Budva. Recommended

home in one piece alright (cant say the same for my bank account ). I had a quick look at it on RTE.ie earlier but they cut back to studio fairly sharp afterwards!

there's a fair few mugs in this next one though - watch out for the two crackers in green being harrassed by Richard Branson. Like how the big german pint gets into the film and great prediction. :D

Had a nice day in Budva on Thursday, some regulars from here had a day on the beach and then I rounded off the trip with a nice few pints afterwards. I must say that Budva is a cracking spot.

I see that most of you are back from Montenegro. Please, write how it was and what do you think about my country after you visited it.
Also,I will ask off topic question:Why Irish and British dont like basketball, handball, volleyball and other sports that are popular in europe and world wide?I was allways curious about that.

I had a great time anyway. The people were really friendly. Everything was really cheap even if prices rose dramatically on Wednesday.
The coastline is really beautiful. Podgorica was surprisingly nice (I had expected worse). Great atmosphere on the Tuesday night. I did spend Tuesday afternoon in Niksic watching the U21 game. Lets just say that Moate is now the 2nd most boring ugly place on planet earth. :D

Yeah I enjoyed it. Saw Podgorica, Budva and Kotor and the countryside and the crazy drivers. Some of the roads are pretty mad and hair raising.
Lovely people, stayed in the Kangaroo hotel in Budva for some of it and very friendly.

Also agree that Podgorica wasn't as grim as I had expected. There were some lovely cafes and bars.
I would though ask you to change the road sign from the coast that directs you over the mountain pass rather than the Sozina tunnel from Petrovac to Podgorica. My blood pressure is only starting to return to normal, beautiful views from the top, but scary as feck! Took the tunnel on the way back needless to say.
Would really like to go back and see Sveti Stefan. Looked unreal from the road.

Got to say, unfortunatly I didn't have the greatest expiriance. Stayed in pod for the trip. First night there, around nine i got a smack (for once, not deserved!) and had my flag stolen. Our bags didn't arrive untill 2 days into the trip and our hotel wasn't in the greatest area. That aside, it had its good moments. Big thanks sent out to AidoM and Beareleven for putting up with me and company for basically the whole trip!! Glad most people had a good time.
Ps Thanks to Sligo Hornet for actually taking me;)

I thought it was one of the best away trips that I've been on, up there with Japan/Korea and Portugal. This was mainly due to the local people who put up with me, after several too many €1 beers. I think there may have been some tequila involved. The local girls were stunning. All of them.
Some photos from my travels: www.awaythelads.com/montenegro (http://www.awaythelads.com/montenegro)
I will be revamping awaythelads.com when I get a chance.

I had a lovely time there in Montenegro. Not surprisingly the highlight was how nice the people were to us. And the ridiculously hot girls! From the moment we boarded the Montenegran Airlines flight with the preposterously beautiful cabin crew to flying out again two days later, it was a seemingly endless parade of long-legged, olive-skinned, clear blue-eyed, bewitching-smiled lovelies.
The other big plus for us was of course the cheap beer. It was no more than €1.50 and as low as €0.80. I'm not a big drinker compared to the other denizens of this forum but even I was seriously langered. It's a bad sign when you're on your third beer before noon...
Not that we just drank. I for one went and took in a bit of culture, though the locals seemed somewhat unprepared. I went to the Gallery & Museum of Podgorica and I was the only visitor there. So much so that the curator fella, once he collected my entance money, had to come with me to turn on the lights to the place!
All in all, we had a great time. You can be sure that if Ireland are ever drawn against Crna Gora again, we will be coming to Podgorica in even greater numbers.
By the way Montenegrin, were you at the match? If so, what was that Montenegrin song that was played over and over again on the PA before the game and at half-time?
