Isn't Stephen Quinn playing regularly for Sheff United and he made a decent impression in the Premiership last year?

He's not been a regular starter this year. He plays the odd game. Alan Sheehan has been playing week in, week out for Leicester this season but McCann has been a regular now for Burnley for about 2 years.

He's playing at a higher level on a more regular basis than any of the others in the squad.

i'm pretty sure he is not the palatcial dwelling, silver spoon fed, limo driven fashionista with top notch totty drewling all over him like our canadian cousin reckons though!!!!

Givens didn't go running to the press.

When the team sheets were made available at the game it was obvious the Irish team and bench were missing one name.

Givens was asked post game, and there were only five media present, what happened to Chris McCann?

He then relayed events. He named his team to the squad late morning but McCann only came to him at 5:15pm, just before they were about to depart for Lisseywollen from their hotel.

Whatever people think of Givens I've always found him willing to give straight and frank answers to all the questions put to him, just as he did last night.

post his side so. as i said i have no great affinity with Givens, actually the results under him are crap. but i don't even think connolly was in our top 5 or 6 strikers at that time and is even further down the pecking order now. but post away, he is obviously your love child or some such.....
I didnt say he was in the top 5 or 6 right now, but to be fair to him, hes the only striker at Sunderland who hasn't been given a chance

Connolly's side

He has the option of saying nothing. He is the manager and elects to speak to the press negatively about many of his players (mostly youngsters). Show me a successful manager that has had that work for him? His "frankness" has never come into the public domain on figures like Delaney or the FAI. Why is that? He picks and chooses his "frankness" does our Don.

So Connolly's version of events:

Givens: "are you fit?"
Connolly: "why do you want to know?"
Givens: "I want to call you into the squad"
Connolly: "Why wasn’t I in the original squad?"
Givens: "I choose the squad"
Connolly: "I feel I should have been in the original squad"
Givens: "do you want to play or not?"
Connolly: "no"
*Givens hangs up*

And Givens version:
Givens: "Hello David, it's Don Givens. Are you fit?"
Connolly: "To what do I owe the honour of this phone call?"
Givens: "I would like you to join the squad tomorrow?"
Connolly: "Why was I not selected in the original squad?"
Givens: "David, that was the choice I made"
Connolly: "I should be the number one striker for Ireland, not number five."
Givens: "David, do you want to come tomorrow?"
Connolly: "no"
Givens: "Right David, good luck"
*Givens hangs up*

They both have good memories as those are very similar. :) I'd be pretty sure he said that thing about being the number 1 striker. Givens isn't going to lie about that and Connolly would be embarrassed to tell the public he said that. The only other difference is whether Givens wished him look before hanging up.

I didn't. He said the conversation ended after the word "no".

"no i'm injured" takes a second to say and if he did say that Givens would have done really well just to hear the first word. He even admitted himself all Givens heard was the word "no". He's just making excuses. It's as clear as day.

Depends how you interpret it, perhaps he was referring to how Givens heard the 'no' in "no I'm injured" and then ended it, or perhaps just heard 'no.' Perhaps had Connolly gone to the press first saying how he should have been first choice everything would be different, but that is Givens' word, so I can't possibly believe it

bottom line is he was upset at not being included in the original squad. he challenged givens over it. givens gave his reasons, which are very close in both accounts, david is not happy. david is then asked if he is available. he responds no (well that is all givens hears in both accounts).

givens says 'he said he should be no. 1 striker', connolly reckons he didn't. I am with givens on this one, i think connolly is trying to twist the story tbh.

when asked if available at the end of the conversation why didn't he say something like 'i would love to but i am injured' or 'i'm injured i can't'. instead he said no (pause, phone hung up on other side) ... i'm injured (to himself/not at all).

we have all been asked to do things in our lives that we would seriously have loved to do but for one reason or another we have been unable. think about it. in a situation like this is the first word of your reply "no, i can't because"", or is it "i would love to but....."

busty blond chick: would you like to come home with me?
me: i would love to but ... i'm married

friend: we are all going to the pub are you coming?
me: i'd love to but i have an early start...

EDIT: on reflection i would probably do both of the above but you know what i'm getting at...:D:D

You clearly did not read my post above carefully, but there is no point arguing about it as, obviously we can't know what was actually said or heard. I believe Connolly because its obvious Givens is not the greatest person on this earth and flies off the handle easily.

Thank you for proving my point, if it wasn't for this (questionable) incident and Brussells over 10 years ago people might not think he should be playing for Ireland but there wouldn't be this level of dislike (I think he'd be though of more like Alan Lee or Clinton Morrison)

Morrison is twice the player of David Connolly. Connolly can put a chance away but he is small, slow, weak and very one dimensional.
