A 77th minute strike from top marksman Stephen O'Flynn was enough to send Limerick back into third place in the First Division with a 1-0 victory over Athlone Town at the Pike Field on Friday night.

After a dull first half both sides went all out for a winner and Athlone were unlucky when Andy Mullins just failed to connect properly with a perfect cross from David Hope. But then O'Flynn settled the issue when he was on target with just 13 minutes remaining after good work by Ciaran Foly and Gareth Cooney.

Limerick - Healy, Molan, Finucane, O'Mahony, Purcell, Cooney, Keating, Sugrue, Heffernan, McCarthy, O'Flynn.

Athlone Town - Moran, Shine, Kelly, Hope, Frawley, Rush, O'Brien, Harney, Collins, McCann, Mullins.

Referee - D.Tomley (Dublin).

Limerick’s top scorer Stephen O’Flynn fired the only goal of the game against Athlone Town at Pike road last night to send his side into the top four of the First Division.

Neither side looked like scoring in the first half as the poor weather conditions seemed to dictate the play but the second half seen both sides looking for the winner.

Athlone were unfortunate not to make the breakthrough when Andy Mullins did not connect properly with David Hope’s cross and the midlanders looked they were going to secure a draw before O’Flynn stepped in.

Substitute Ciaran Foley began the move and he fed Gareth Foley who in turn set up the prolific O’Flynn to fire home and move Mike Kerley’s side into fourth place in the league.

For Jimmy Greene’s side it’s back to the drawing board after last weekend’s magnificent win over Bray Wanderers, the Town were brought back down to earth with a bump and now have suffered four defeats in seven matches.
