Good topic !

I`m very happy with john gill, 2nd place and 3rd place in two seasons, won a play off the first (well he did), ok this season wasn`t good as we led by 6 pts in june, but certain players didnt perform and our defence was ravaged by injuries all summer. In saying that the state we were in before he arrived (9th, 8th, 5th) not to mention the off field situation, we are in much better shape now. Its just taking a year longer than we expected.

He`ll do a good job for us long term.

I was going to say I was pretty happy with Rico, but having read the story about the new crest on http://www.corkcityfc.ie/index2.htm I think the club should be immediately disbanded and all associated with it locked up.

I think it's bizarre that the clubs with by far the highest budgets the league has ever seen (Shels, Pat's and Drogs - going purely on the basis of their losses, which are double the smaller clubs' income) have gotten lumped with those I'd rate as the poorest managers in the league (Fenlon, McDonnell and - to I'm sure much rabid ranting from Drogs fans - Doolin). Fenlon's been found out since, obviously, Doolin flopped at UCD without the cash, and I never really rated McDonnell to be honest. Could possible add Seán Connor to that list - jury's still out on him. Have to wonder how much more they could have done with a better manager.

Nonsense. Fenlon delivered the title to Shels, Doolin likewise to Drogs. What more do you want ? OK as you point out (yet again) they had big budgets, but haven't you noticed ? That's what happens in football. Man U, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Milan, Barcelona. Do you think they are successful because a) They have genius coaches, or b) They have more money than most of the competition and can afford the best players.? I'm not saying that you don't have to have a good coach, but sackfuls of cash sure helps. Do you think for instance, that if Arsene Wenger took over UCD next year you'd win the league ?

As for Johnny Mac, he had bugger all money to spend in his first season, and steadied the ship. He had a bit more second season and improved the league position and got to a cup final. This year, with an increased budget again he got to second in the table. That seems like good progress to me.

For a guy with a UEFA pro badge, Connor seems tactically inept. Gets the gameplan wrong for the big games every time.
Say what you like. He gets results. His targets were top 4 finish in the League ... Bohs ended up 3rd. He wanted to do well in the Cups , 1 Final and 1 Semi-final is better than almost all the other teams in the League managed.

I am happy with Pete Mahon as a manager , the back up team of coaches too. I'd sack some of the team though. They completely failed to perform in League matches for about 8 weeks.

Two 0-0 draws in a row when we're fighting for our lives? Don't think we created more than 3 clear chances in the Galway and Rovers games. Have the play-off Gareth, we'll see what happens after that.

he doesnt get the important ones, like winning cups to qualify for Setanta and UEFA, not mickey mouse sh1te like the InterToto. Furthermore, tactically he leaves a lot to be desired, his team plays sh1te football and he spends money very poorly. 20 odd signings and only a handful that have added to our team in any significant way.

Am i happy with Sean Connor? No.

I think having to manage a team like UCD with it's resources would be a superb test for someone like Mourinho or Wenger. And yes given his (i.e. Wenger's)track record of finding young players from anywhere and developing them, he'd add some amazing foreign talent to the squad ( e.g. 2 strikers who can hit a cow's arse with a banjo week in and week out) and we wouldn't be in the relegation danger we were in during the last third of the season for sure. Win the League? Maybe not, qualify for Europe... probably!

Mahon's got the best network of Irish talent around, but as we all know Irish players don't score goals in large numbers in this League and stay there very long. Wenger has the best network of young talent in the world. And without dough that's the way he would have to go.

Absolutely. But I still think they're poor managers. They could (should) have won the league by more with the resources at their disposal, or done better in Europe. A better manager would have done this.

Fenlon was shown up at Derry. Did he suddenly become a poor manager overnight? I don't think so. Ditto Doolin when he went from UCD to Drogheda. I don't think you can call someone a good manager because they have a big budget. You have to take their budget into account when rating them.

If Rico does go, do you reckon Brian Carey could be a possible replacement?

He's under a lot of pressure at Wrexham at the moment. Maybe a return home could be on the cards?

Rico has done a good job at a difficult time for us but I get the feeling, he'll bow out after the Cup Final, hopefully on a high.

i would like to see jimmy mcgeough back at waterford united.
biggest mistake the club ever made when they sacked him.
jimmy was a crowd puller and had the team playing top football.
both players and fans loved him.

Had drogheda not taken their foot off the gas after they won the league they would have had the record league points total. So the first part of this is bull.

Fenlon was shown up at derry but there are a lot of other things to take into consideration too. I think a lot up there is down to the players tbh.

Johnny mac has done well and we have progressed under him. No doubt about it. Whether we can progress anymore, im not sure. A lot depends on signings during the close season which a manager also has to be judged on regardless of resources. You can have great rsources and bring in cr*p players. Johnny has had a few "ifs" in this department so it will be interesting to see how he does this year.(If he gets the chance).

A lot of whom he signed himself?

Ireland beat San Marino 2-1; does that win (we couldn't have gotten more points from the game) mean Stan's a good manager? That's the kind of distinction I'm making between a successful manager and a good manager.

Yes and seems so are the club:

MONAGHAN UNITED FC

PRESS RELEASE

Dated: 12th November 2007

MICK COOKE STAYS ON AS MANAGER
Monaghan United FC have officially confirmed that Mick Cooke has been offered and accepted another contract as Manager of the Senior team. Cooke joined Monaghan United in September 2003 and is one of the longest serving managers of the eircom League.

Cooke brought in some fine players over the season and hopes to retain the bulk of his squad for the 2008 season.

“I have decided to stay at United as I feel Monaghan are a club who are going places. They are well organised and the future of football in the area is in good hands. They have had some phenomenal success for a small club. Recently Philip Donnelly from the Under 15’s squad was on trials with Blackburn Rovers and Aaron McCarey, also from the Under 15’s is heading to Aston Villa on trials in the coming weeks and has earned his first cap at Under 16 level. The Women’s team won their first league title this year, in what was their second season in existence. The Under 21’s won the Foyle Cup during the summer. All these positives show that United are moving in the right direction and I am delighted to be part of such a progressive set up.”

“I hope to hold on to 7-8 of the team from this season and build around them. We were plagued by injuries this season but when I had a full squad to choose from in the 3rd quarter of the season we only lost 2 games in 10 played. I am very optimistic about the future for Monaghan and am looking forward to the new season already.”

Ends.

Stephen Henderson has won the league with one of the lowest budgets in the first division,(prob half of Athlone Shels Harps Dundalks) and seems to be a manager that is backed by ALL his players,i think motivation is a big factor in the first division and having a good coach which Ramblers have in Martin Cambridge,i reacon he could be around for a while yet but seems settled in Cobh so long may his policy"s continue.:)

PS. Best manager in the prem this year has to be scully and to a lesser extent cook for his style of play.

Im sorry but that argument does not hold up. Manchester united lost 1-0 to manchester city, does that mean that he's a bad manager?? I think not.

Yes fenlon brought a few players with him. Im not going to defend him because theres no doubt that he made mistakes but i think if you ask a lot of derry fans they'll be just as dissapointed with their players.

Eh?

He let go of decent Premier players and brought in has-beens and never-weres.

He also neglected to tie half the first team to contracts.

Unfair for me to pass judgement.

Thankfully I was in the Southern Hemisphere for the entire Fenlon era.
