Just seen Eurogoals and Van Hooijdunk is the best free kicker taker in Europe at the moment.
Got me thinking about the League Here.

Best Free taker at the moment in LOI = i dont know
Ever in LOI = Dave Barry
Best in Europe at the moment = Van Hooijdunk.

What do others think?

I presume you mean direct freekicks?

Well since poxy NTL dropped eurosport me no see Eurogoals so can't comment on Van Hooijdunk except for his Uefa Cup final goal.

Beckham is not world class & more hype than anything else but he does take a mean dead ball.

Over the last few years wasn't anyone better than Martin Russell in the eL. Hard to know who the best in the league now...

Was Dave Barry really that good a freekick taker?

Certainly Cork City have been badly lacking any decent freekick (direct or indirect) taker in recent years.

Lads if we're talking free kick Set Piece Athletic must come into it:D

IMO the best I've seen in this league were Martin Russell, Paul Byrne, Pat Fenlon, Mark Kenny and Eddie Gormley. This season we've had Keith Fahey score from 40 yards dissallowed, hit the bar twice and score with his four free kicks so far, so he's not bad

Dave Barry was world's apart from anyone in the league at the moment!

He scored from everywhere!

Keith Fahy from 40 yards?

Dave had plenty of them in his day!

Best Free taker at the moment in LOI = Bobby Ryan

Best in Europe at the moment = Beckham, there can be no contest here as far as I'm concerned

There are 5 players i get nervous over if I have had a bet on the match and this player is about to take a free.

These are...
1. David Beckam(Manchester United)
2. van Hooiydonk(Nottingham Forrest)
3. Michael Figo(Real Madrid)
4. Del Piaro(Jew-vntus)
5. Alan Reilly(WAAAAterford united)

Dont know if he is always this good but in the Cork City-Derry Match at the Cross last Season Seán Friars took a perfect freekick, totally unstopable into the top left hand corner. Ref disallowed it. Straigh away Friars retook the free sending an even better free into the opposite corner. Amazing stuff, the Shed even clapped it.

George O'Callaghan scored a superb free kick against Pats in Inchicore last season, he hasn't managed to replicate it since though!

dave barry was a legend with the free kicks

Oh, Jeebus

Forest arent on Eurogoals, Feyenoord are  . Thats what i was talking about. He won the Uefa cup for them last season and is still thumping in his gaols and free kicks again this season

Add Joe O'Mahony to the list of the greatest ever. "Have a go Joe" was always the cry on the Popular Side in the 70's whenever we got a free kick.

In the EL I would have to say Friars, Broughan and Myler as the top 3 Free Kickers.

Best ever has to be Gheorge Hagi and I have evidence to back me up........
Free V Bayern Munich (http://www.hagi.ro/engl/movies/99-GS-Mke-2-0-Hagi.mpeg)

Freekick V Longhaired Goalie (http://www.hagi.ro/engl/movies/Hagi%20Freekick03.mpeg)

Another Free Kick (http://www.hagi.ro/engl/movies/Hagi%20Freekick01.mpeg)

The man is a legend. Stuart Pearce and Denis Irwin were great too......

nice few Hagi free kicks there...

del piero tales a good free kick, don't rate beckham too high.
i remember the sean friars efforts mentioned and i've never seen a better effort in the LOI, especially to hit the second one.

Can't believe nobody's mentioned the greatest free kick ever taken.
World Cup 2002, QF, Ronaldinho steps up, Seaman, anticipating the cross, takes a couple of steps..........

Has to be Sean Friars right now in the EL.

The only problem is that we dont get many free's near the edge of the box :(

Russell was excellent for the past few seasons but over the last 15 years in the EL maybe the one and only Liam Coyle might be up there with the best of free kick takers.

ah the majority of opinions here are too biased , i go for marc kenny-always got a bad feeling when rovers got a free in a dangerous position against us

Best I've ever seen is Van Hooijdonk. His percentage of goals to frees is so far ahead of anyone else that its not funny. He has done it at every club, in Europe, for holland, a dead ball genius.

In the EL, Friars has to be up there, although Robbie Doyle has a sweet strike too.

im sure all the pats supporters will remember the free kick stuart holt took in the last game of the season two seasons ago, ya know the year ye won the league. he was a good 10 yards outside the box if not more and the pressure on him was immence if we had of lost that game we would have been relegated and he scored a handful more that season and the season before that sure it was the main reason he got playing. have to say myler looks dangerous when he is hitting free kicks to. for me the free kick specialist has to be reberto carlos.
