Just found out that John McGrath won't be offered a new contract by Aston Villa. He's only a young lad, has played a few times for their first team and is from Newcastle West. Anybody sense the potential for a scoop here? Only drawback is that Longford are sniffing around.

Would be quite a scoop. How much would he cost though. we probably wouldn't be able to compete with premier clubs. Who knows? What position does he play?

He's a defensive midfielder I think. There's a girly in college here who knows him, I must drop her a line and suss it out! As you said, it'll be tough to compete with Premier clubs.
I think maybe Paul Leahy on loan from Waterford could be worth looking at. He lost his place there after a disaster against Shels and hasn't been near the team since so he'd probably be available?
COLCHESTER AND QPR ARE INTERESTED IN SIGNING HIM

Yeah but can they afford him now that they lost their play-off game and have to stay in the second division for at least another year?
And am I the only one wondering how a club with 'Queen' and 'Rangers' in theie name became so popular with Irish folk?
As for McGrath, it now looks as though he's gonna be staying in England though a couple of Premier clubs here are still keen.
Local club when growing up over there my Boy!!..beats supporting all the glory clubs and they are underachievers like ourselves. Queens Park is the area in London where the Club first came from..hence the name !!. Hope this info helps to explain it for you SLK..btw who do you support ??

I keep an eye for both Aston Villa (I know, I know...) and Forest Green Rovers in the conference (my cousin's local team). Villa of course are the club who caused this whole thread by releasing Mr.McGrath!

Something like that actually happened (last summer I think). Alan McLoughlin, scorer of the goal that sent Ireland to the World Cup in 1994 was considering signing for St.Pats (played in a friendly or two for them I think) but instead signed for Forest Green at the last minute...
Can't imagine McGrath will drop as far down the divisions as that but will probably end up in the second division over if he doesn't come home.

In my boredom I dredged this thread up... I 'discovered' John McGrath as a Limerick prospect almost two and a half years ago. :ball:
