Kenny unfazed by poor start

Bohemians may be five-points behind league leaders Shelbourne, but Stephen Kenny believes it is too early in the season to press the panic button.

The league champions have not hit the same form as last year just yet, and have struggled to put teams away at home. Friday night saw second from bottom Derry take a point from Dalymount, but the doom mongers should stay away warns the club manager.

“Of course it is disappointing to draw at home, it always is,” insisted Kenny. “However, it is not as if it is towards the end of the season and we desperately need the points.

I’d worry if there were only six or seven games left and we were five points behind Shelbourne. As it stands we have got 29 games left and a lot is going to happen between now and the end of the season.”

Kenny is acutely aware that performances like that against Derry will not be good enough to win another title, and he expects better from his players.

“I haven’t been too despondent with many of our displays but the Derry game was a poor one. We conceded a bad goal and even though we managed to get back into it, Derry killed the game.”

One of the problems when you are champions is that other sides lift their game when they come to play you, and Kenny feels that his players need to rise to the challenge, especially in their home games.

“We can’t expect team to come here and just roll over and die,” stressed Kenny. “We have to ensure that expectancy isn’t mistaken for complacency.”
