Ok "DrDoc" and "The Lilywhites" have put together an Under 23 squad - its not neccessarily what we think Fenlon and Matthews will go for but we reckon it will come close(ish) :D

Barry Murphy Shamrock
Darren Quigley UCD

Seamus Coleman Sligo
Connor Kenna UCD
Ian Bermingham UCD
Conor Powell Bohemians
Gavin Peers Sligo
Dean Lawrence Shamrock
Sean Kelly Cork
Shane Guthrie Cobh

Shane McFaul UCD
Gary Deegan Longford
Stephen McDonnell Bohemians
JP Kelly Bohemians
Jay OShea Bray
Conan Byrne UCD
Ronan Finn UCD
Shaun Williams Dundalk(on loan from Drogheda)
Kevin Deery? Derry
Stephen Bradley Drogheda

Matthew Judge Sligo
Mark Quigley St Pats
Tadgh Purcell Shamrock
Conor Sammon UCD
Dave Mooney? Longford

Mooney and Deery have question marks as we are not sure if they are eligible

Two First Division Players have been included - sure to be debatable - Lilywhites insisted on Williams and well we thought Guthrie has had a good season

Its a 25 man squad - we couldnt decide on another keeper so we didnt pick any

Barry Molloy?, Ger Rowe?, Paddy Kavanagh? Killian Brennan? were midfielders obviously considered but we thought they may be ineligible. Molloy if eligible would get our vote for sure - Kavanagh probably also, and perhaps Rowe and or Brennan. We also considered Gary McCabe but he didnt make the final cut

Upfront we have serious doubts over Behans eligibility so we have left him out to be on the safe side - otherwise he would be a cert - no anti cork bias here. Karl Bermigham and Paul Dunphy were also mentioned but their names didnt come out of the hat

Is Bohs' Murphy under 23? If so, he should be there.

Alan Keane & John Fitzgerald will surely get a look in.

If Bray get any players in then i reckon it will be McCabe and Kavangh, 2 of the best young wingers in the league. Mark Duggan and Jay O'Shea also have a shout.

Just looking through the list, it's great to see so much young talent in the league who can only get better. Depending on what the cut off date is for players the likes of Zayed and Beehan could also be included...

We werent sure about Keane and Fitzgerald age wise, we did consider them though - Fitzgerald in particular

We didnt think Bates was irish

The bray guys will have a better idea but I had been very impressed by OShea anytime I saw him. Duggan was also mentioned but for his position there were better options we thought. Kavanagh we think might be too old - not sure

We thought Zayed was 24 but we may have got that wrong

Seeing as Price has been injured pratically all season he wasnt considered - he still is injured also

Both the Galway lads are 23.

You're right on everything else, apart from Kavanagh who is 21.

Cannot think of any City player worthy of this. Sean Kelly is not good enough.

Would be interesting to see how many of this squad would get near an eL best squad (i.e. no age restrictions). Can't see much point in the tournament anyway.

Don't think I've ever seen a national team squad selected without someone claiming this about some player

I think I make 6 players not first choice at their clubs.

Was unsure if Behan was young enough but Darren Murphy (not started a game since June) & Sean Kelly (not good enough yet) are strange choices.

Cannot comment on omissions as don't know the age of players from other clubs.

All bar 2 players from the top & clubs in the league.

Keegan's not first choice at Drogheda but would be for practically any other team.

Looks a bit short at centre half to me

True. Kelly & Murphy picked for that position. See comments above...

What a joke that Alan Keane isnt in the squad.Im hoping drogs or someone doesnt try get him from us during the off season.he reminds me of jamie carragher,so consistent,a great reader of the game, and he plays for the shirt.
this is the squad to play against the non league english and welsh sides yes?id love to see an eircom league squad picked of irish players of any age group, they'd beat a league 1 english equivalent i reckon.

AFAIK he was born in Newcastle in England, he played for Newcastle United and then for Newcastle Jets in Australia

Is the Conna Maradonna under age still. AKA Liam Kearney.

Thought he played U-21 with Dennis Behan

Is the Conna Maradonna under age still. AKA Liam Kearney.Wouldn't think so, he must be 4 or 5 years in the league now and I think he was about 20 when he signed for Cork.

Anoyone know where the tournament's being held? I can understand the English, Welsh and Irish leagues being involved, but it's a bit random to have Italy, Belgium, Finland and Slovakia. And no Scotland, apparently.

Based on what I know, this is who's taking part:

Group A:
England
Wales
Finland
Italy

Group B:
Rep of Ireland
Northern Ireland
Belgium
Slovakia

Wouldn't it be much better logistically speaking to have Scotland involved instead of Slovakia? Bet it's costing their FA a fortune to enter them.

Why is it random for them and not for us? Its just a makey up thing anyway with different eligibility rules for different countries

Well I guess you could say it's random for them because the European teams are from all over the place whereas the British and Irish teams are located rather close to each other. That's what I meant rather than eligibility rules.

Bit disappointed to see Gary Deegan not get into the squad, been our best player this season IMO.

Out of that lot, my team would be:

Murphy
Coleman Kenna Peers Powell
Kavanagh Keegan Joxer Brennan
Mooney Quigley

What have attendances for these games been like previously? I know the standard of player wasn't anywhere near as good though (mostly reserves and youths from the EL clubs).

Dreadful.

In 2002 the largest attendance that year was the game between England and Ireland in Boston Lincs 400, Ireland V Scotland in Kettering was 220 and Ireland V Wales in Boston 300

They appear to be similar in years 2002/04/05 and 06.

There were about 200 for an interleague game in terryland 7 or 8 years ago against the Irish leagues finest. It was close enough to a full strength eircom league side as well.

Is this what ther Nordies have been banging on about re Gibson et al ?

Seems ridiculous that someone born on the island of Ireland, constitutionally and legally entitled to an Irish passport by birth, should be ruled ineligible to play for Ireland by a bunch of soccercrats in Switzerland......

Good Friday agreement anyone....?

That's a different situation. Higgins played for Northern Ireland U-21s but didn't declare that he was switching allegiance to the Republic before he turned 21.

What about the below line frOm that article though. Is it just RTE getting the story wrong ? :

However, UEFA refused to sanction the move as the Derry City midfielder has no connections with the Republic.
