Republic of Ireland Under-23 manager Pat Fenlon will announce his squad for the inaugural International Challenge Trophy next Tuesday, October 30th.

The International Challenge Trophy is an Under-23 tournament that also includes England, Italy, Wales, Finland, Belgium, Slovakia and Northern Ireland. It will be played on a group basis over the next 18 months, with the winner of each group contesting the final.

The Republic of Ireland will kick-off their campaign against Slovakia in Dalymount Park on November 13th (kick-off 7.45pm). Fenlon’s squad will then play Northern Ireland away in the spring and complete the group stage next autumn at home to Belgium.

The Republic of Ireland squad will consist entirely of eircom League of Ireland players, which represents an exciting new opportunity for the league’s top young players to test themselves against European opposition.

Manager Pat Fenlon and Assistant Manager Alan Matthews will announce the Republic of Ireland squad on Tuesday in the O’Callaghan Alexander Hotel, which is located on Fenian Street just a short distance from Merrion Square.
We can expect at least a couple of players in this. Those who have got U-21 caps (Quigley, Finn, Sammo) would be certainties you would imagine. Bermingham, Kenna, Conan and King all have a great chance as well. Fenlon has been at almost all of our recent matches so must be watching a couple of UCD players.

Well if we are involved in a play off they may not get to play :(

The playoff isn't until the following week.

Oh that's great so we now run the risk of getting someone injured on international duty before the play off. Can this season get any worse?

Quigley, Kenna and Sammo all selected. No Finn.

Pete Mahon included in backroom staff as Pro License Coach.

How do you get tickets for the game? Do you go directly to Dalymount or get them from ticketmaster?

If Patrick Kavanagh could get in there then you'd think Conan Byrne could have. Still nice to see the club get represented by three players.

Kavanagh has been doing very well lately, while Conan hasn't produced the form he did earlier in the season at the right time. Very unlucky as he would have almost certainly been in the squad otherwise.

Conan is the only real surprise omission for me. Birmingham's still only 18, Finn & King haven't been playing as well as McFaul and Sammo has a lot of competition up front.

I was abroad for a lot of the season and didn't make all that many home games, but from what I saw Finn was quite disappointing this season, given the impact he made last year and the potential he displayed then.

Bermingham has looked first-rate however.

Finn started off the season very quiet, took him a while to adapt to playing centre mid. He's been doing very well recently though and taking into account that he has been capped at U-21 level and that Fenlon has been to a lot of our recent games I thought he would get picked, especially when you see some of the players that were picked.

Shane McFaul would have certainly made it had he been fit.

Birmingham's still only 18
He's also in the U-19 squad, who I think are playing the same week.
