Just broken on RTE News by Tony O'Donoghue at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Santry. I am glad he got a massive pay off. They were stupid enough to give him the job for as long as they did. At least its over now, and time to move on to the next phase.

He said about a million. Its actually about 800, 000. It has not been announced but T O D is reckoning that is going to happen.

Without Delaney gone, it means nothing. Stan was a symptom of the problem, not the root cause.

Is it a defo or just TOD"S sources?

If his contract gets paid up in full, and it seems to be the case that it will be, then it will be a million, based on just over 2.5 years left on a contract of €400,000 per annum. Money isn't a big issue fro Stan. He's a very wealthy man independently. I'd say he just wants to vent his anger by screwing every penny out of them he can, and I don't blame him.

Only the FAI and Delaney could offer a 4 year deal to a pure rookie manager with zero experience. How Delaney has the balls to defend his mown position in all of this astounds me.

It's not official until it's announced in the press conference.

Well it's not breaking news on Sky Sports news yet, so is it just Tony telling us what we already know. I want official confirmation.

The momentum against Delaney needs to be maintained.

In a way I agree but it is also our money that he is making off with for doing nothing. I know he had a contract but it still leaves a foul taste.

DUBLIN, Oct 23 (Reuters) - Ireland’s national soccer coach
Steve Staunton has been sacked by the Football Association of
Ireland (FAI), Irish public broadcaster RTE reported on Tuesday.
RTE said the FAI’s board had taken the decision after
convening a meeting earlier on Tuesday. Staunton had appeared
before the body’s management.
There was no immediate confirmation from the FAI.
The former Liverpool and Aston Villa defender had come under
renewed pressure after last week’s 1-1 draw with Cyprus ended
Ireland’s hopes of qualifying for Euro 2008.

Staunton should be ashamed of himself. Pearce walked at Man City and didn't take a penny. This excuse for a 'manager' walks off with a small fortune. Hang your head in shame you moron.

Kinda agree, he might have a legal right to the payoff but that is not necessarily a moral right. He has made a handsome amount from his two years in charge, it's not like he sacrificed managing Real Madrid to take the Irish job.

The morons are the ones who gave him the guaranteed deal that requires such a payout. They need to go next...

Yes, according to this article, he is interested in the job:

Jesus Paddy, he coudl not have done more to keep Jol in a job, not defending his Ireland form but his Spurs form has been top class. Not his fault they cannot defend.

A mate said that he didn't rule himself out when O'Herlihy pressed him on the issue. He was supportive of the FAI for the way they handled the press conference, doesn't want to make enemies at this stage I guess.

It may be the fans money, but the FAI are the ones who determine how it is spent and their decisions have required this payout to move on.

It's a rare individual that would not take the payment Stan is taking. There are those posting on this board who may be some of those rare people. However, I think it is important to recognize that the vast majority of people would take the payout. If you accept that premise, then blame must be focused on the FAI for not setting up conditions in which such a payout would be unnecessary by doing their contract appropriately up front. It's not like Stan had a lot of leverage after all ... what was he doing, coaching in League One? You could have written almost anything into that contract and the dude would have signed it to be manager of Ireland.

I'll be wishing Staunton many days of happiness with his new found wealth every time I think of the €70 spent on each game in Croke Park especially the Cyprus game.

Free at last.

Just looking at the SKY pictures from the Mansion House, both Stan and Bobby looked about 10 years younger. Probably we all looked 10 years younger then.

I dont think he will be at the conference. I would say he is well on his way back to Walsal or wherever he lives in the UK.

I agree. Delaney has to be asked why hegave Stan a 4 year contract with no pre-conditions. And this carry on tonight with no official comment yet is another own goal for the FAI.

Fair point. A 4 year contract for a guy who had never done the job. Only in Ireland. Anyway, last we'll ever see of him outside the Conference.

He ended up as manager of Dundalk after being canned from Ireland in a recent Football Manager session I played :)
