Just looking through that songs with numbers list I noted 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover was there and it reminded me that I was listening to it earlier today and for the first time kinda properly heeded the lyrics 'slip out the back Jack, make a new plan Stan, no need to be coy Roy, just set yourself free', and so obviously noted Simon's remarkable clairvoyance of big events in Irish football and thought it might be an idea for a new thread. So here ya are.

I think what really compounded my interest in all this, er, riveting, topic was having read, as some of ye might have, American journo, writer etc Chuck Klosterman's revelation in his pretty decent book Killing Yourself to Live that the sequence and songs of Kid A (kinda like The Wall/Alice in Wonderland 'mystery' I guess) bears an uncanny resemblance to the tragic events that unfolded on 9/11. A quick search around produced a blog article which does a good job of getting the point across. It's pretty weird (http://vassifer.blogs.com/alexinnyc/2005/07/klostermans_the.html) to say the least.

(No strict rules here or anything, just opening it up for general discussion, like lyrics that seemed to freakishly be applicable to your life at some point, such as that time you and Julio were down by the schoolyard or whatever you're having yourself.)

Gibberish and nonsense were the first two words that sprang into my mind, I'm sure if I went through the track listing of Jon Bon Jovi's first solo album I can directly correspond each song to a world event.

EDIT: I'll throw John, I'm Only Dancing as my song, oddly enough about a time I was dancing with someone called John:p

Ah fair play to your subconscious for trying to somehow stem the gushing flow of ridiculous thoughts you have. :p

Sorry, you're pretty much right though, I was more using it as an example for illustrative purposes for the thread than saying I agreed with the theory. It's just I remember my friend getting excited about it when he was reading the book, infecting me with his enthusiasm, so I gave it a bit more credence than you. By the way, go for that Bon Jovi idea, you might make it entertaining. :p

:D Very good!

Alas, I fear that vision may not be so prophetic.

''Drop off the key Lee and get yourself free.''
Keeping with Mr. Simon's 50 Ways song ...

This is telling Mr. Carsley that now might be a good time to retire from the Irish team.

True, a good time for him to retire would have been whe n the song came out.

No, I still haven't got over him playing for us the first time, never mind the post retirement period.

To be fair he hasn't underperformed for Ireland under Staunton to the same extent as some other so called ''stars''.

True. However, is it better to be drinking tea or coffee when you are standing waist deep in excrement? (Trust me, that is one of the more printable options that came to my mind).

Back to music, my favourite ambiguous lines would be in China Girl. Perhaps not so much ambiguous as "Did he just say what I thought he said".

Spinal Tap -Tonight (I'm Gonna Rock It)

You're sweet
but you're just four feet
and you've still got your baby teeth

you're too young
and I'm too well hung
but tonight I'm gonna rock it
tonight I'm gonna rock it
tonight I'm gonna rock it
tonight I'm gonna rock it
TONIGHT!!!

:D

I've always liked Girlfriend in a coma by the Smiths
on the face of it , its a man talking about his "girlfriend in a coma" and i've seen it argued that it was him who put her there and thats why he doenst want to see her and also that the girlfriend represents his heterosexuality.

Girlfriend in a coma, I know
I know - its serious
Girlfriend in a coma, I know
I know - its really serious

There were times when I could
Have murdered her
(but you know, I would hate
Anything to happen to her)

No, I dont want to see her

Do you really think
Shell pull through ?
Do you really think
Shell pull through ?
Do ...

Girlfriend in a coma, I know
I know - its serious
My, my, my, my, my, my baby, goodbye

There were times when I could
Have strangled her
(but you know, I would hate
Anything to happen to her)
Would you please
Let me see her !

Do you really think
Shell pull through ?
Do you really think
Shell pull through ?
Do ...
Let me whisper my last goodbyes

I know - its serious

''And if a ten ton truck should smash into us to die by your side... ''etc. Another Smiths ditty written by Stephen Morrissey.

Nothing ambiguous about that it's quasi-romantic :D

Coffee because you're less likely to fall asleep face first into it ;)

"Give it a lash Jack,
never never never say no,
Ireland Ireland Republic of Ireland,
Rev it up and here we go."

Uncanny resemblance to Ireland's national team around 1990.

And we finished 8th in that tournament as I recall. We're a long way from 8th best in the world now.
