Zeller intervention saves Kildare

A Shay Zeller goal 15 seconds after he was introduced as substitute ensured Kildare County drew 1-1 with Athlone Town at Station Road.

Stephen Kelly had put the visitors in front after just three minutes when he slotted home a Mick McCann cross after Alan Keely had been caught in possession, but after immense pressure, Kildare finally grabbed the equaliser in the 64th minute when Zeller headed home Damien Brennan's cross.

Teams:
Kildare County: Russell, Brennan, Hutchinson, Purdy, Keely, Kenny, O'Connor, Whelehan, Hughes, O'Connor, McNevin.

Kildare County 1-1 Athlone Town
Kildare County were unable to make up lost ground on the league leaders when held to a draw at Station Road by struggling Athlone Town on Saturday night, but it could have been even worse for the Thoroughbreds but for a second half equaliser by sub Shay Zellor.

Amazingly, Zellor had only been on the field a matter of seconds when he got on the end of cross from right back Damien Brennan in the 65th minute.

Until then, Kildare had struggled to break down a resolute visiting defence, which sought to guard a lead gained as early as the third minute through striker Stephen Kelly.

Mickey McCann - who left Kildare for St Mel’s Park in the close-season - put a dangerous ball across goal, and Kelly reacted quicker than Alan Keely to beat Wayne Russell in the home goal.

But Kildare rallied to equalise 20 minutes into the second half, although, despite extensive pressure, they were unable to find a winner in the closing minutes that would have closed the gap on leaders Dublin City - Kildare’s next opponents - to just a point.
