Cyprus go third if they win on Wednesday, Slovaks likely to pass us also, the Welsh in Cardiff will fancy their chances against the Gaffer,San Marino have too much to do, so hey we won't come last.PROGRESS? In double headers V Germany and Czech Republic, and away to Slovaks and Cyprus we garnered 3 points from 18!!!!STAN MUST GO....COME ON CYPRUS!

I presume this is a joke. Now I'm all for Stan getting the boot but if we do finish fourth (or even fifth) there's no guarantee that the FAI will give him his P45. Even if he does go we'll be screwed for the next qualification no matter what manager we have since we'll be such low seeds.

Stan is on a four year contract and no amount of criticism will shift him. He is there with the world cup 2010 as his target and wont be removed before that whether fans like it or not.

The best thing to do is get behind the team , hope that we can make third place and see if that helps our seeding for the WC draw.

Its hardly scintillating stuff , but thats how it is for Ireland at the moment.

If it's any consolation look at the English rugby team. Ashton was hired and was under no pressure to produce in the six nations, just to build towards the world cup. Now they are in the final. In my eyes the game against Germany was a promising sign for the future.

But Ashton did not build towards this world Cup by bringing your players in as the team that is there is all old heads and they are playing non expansive rugby which is not the Ashton way. He has taken a very practical lets win now approach to this world Cup.

Thought Ashton was appointed earlier than he was. My general point still stands though.

Here, here. I caught Stans pre-match interview on sat. One of his final lines was, "Ah sure we'll see how it goes.". Incredible comment coming from a manager of an international football team.

I not one for calling for a managers head. I always try and back him but I am sick of this nonsense now. Saturday as an event was utterly pathetic, the atmosphere (primarily due to the fact that we have nothing to play for) was awful, the silly green hands made us look even more small-time than usual. I dont care what anyone says Croke Park is a souless corporate bowl. It is not suitable for football. I really cant stand watching football in that place.

I wouldnt wish a loss on Ireland but in my eyes we are there for the taking by Cyprus now that Dunne is missing from central defence. In the event that we lose or draw, Stan will have to move on. It would just be wrong to leave him be as manager given our results throughout this campaign. Our home results thus far have been:

Czech 1-1
Wales 1-0
Slovakia 1-0
Germany 0-0

At home, well on irish soil, this set of result is no where near good enough. Im not even going to start on our away form!

Goal difference doesn't matter, Cyprus get at least a draw against us and they would finish ahead of us IF we are on the same points....I've a feeling that they're the sort of team that are full of confidence at home but just seem to fall apart away from home so I don't see them beating us to be honest. Not that I'd ever shout against an Irish team anyway but it does seem to need something drastic to happen in order for us to rid ourselves of "the gaffur"....

Cyprus at home have a decent record . Away from home they are even worse than an Irish team who haven't been good away from home since 1914. :D

Christ sake, there are too many plastic supporters here.
Regardless weather you agree or disagree with the Manager/Delaney situation what is the logic in supporting the oppisition!

Should we all not be supporting our country through thick and thin?

Get a grip lads!

If we win on wed, we're more or less guaranteed finishing third, unless Slovakia manage to beat Czech Rep away which is very unlikely.

Unless something dramatic like two losses in our last two games happens, i think its safe to say Stan will be in the job for 2010. Every since he started he's been using the line that hes building for the WC so he and the fai are always gonna fall back on that.

but we've very rarely looked like conceding in any of those games... if only we could take our defensive solidarity on the road. face it, we're only ever going to be a counterattacking team away from home no matter who we play and our home defensive record is good enough to suggest we have something to build on. Leaving aside the cyprus debacle, our defence throughout the group has been pretty good.

Yeah, and apart from the Germany,Cyprus,Czech Republic matches we're unbeaten ;)!

So when we're at possibly our lowest ebb since the Charlton era, a home draw against a team ranked 4 in the world, and a home draw against a team in the top 10 (not 100% sure on that one) when we had a whole load of injuries, and 2 wins, isn't good enough?

Drawing with Portugal when we were riding high, and a draw with The Netherlands, even though we won, would've been good enough back when we were much better than we are today.

Flippin hell!!

my basic point is that compared to slovakia wales and cyprus, our defensive record is pretty good. sure, the germans and czechs have only conceded four each, but leaving out cyprus, we've only conceded six in total, and the other teams are nearer to sixteen. there are some positives to be drawn from this campaign and for what it's worth i think stan has improved as a manager as the group went along. maybe not massively and maybe not enough, but he's shown enough in defence to indicate that we could bore our way to the world cup (7 1-0 wins and 7 0-0 draws would do for me).

Whats your point, are you trying to say that this was somehow not a disaster of a campaign?

I suppose scraping a 2-1 win against a team ranked 195th in the world is pretty decent alright, or even better a 5-2 defeat to a team ranked 82nd in the world is the type of results we should be aiming for!

Yeah, come to think about it things are all tight, heck we may even be over-achieving! HERE COME THE GOOD TIMES!

I'm talking about home form here kid. Didn't even touch on away form or the campaign in general. Thats another story altogether. Our home form has been better, yes, better, than Kerrs World Cup campaign, thats of course provided we win tomorrow night, which isn't guaranteed at all. But IF (I'm syaing if just incase you decide to jump the gun again) we win tomorrow night, we'll have had a very good home record this time round. THATS HOME RECORD.

So read the post properly, look for where the words 'away' and 'decent campaign' are mentioned before jumping the gun, alright?
