Super-sub Doyle saves Bohemians

Longford Town 1-1 Bohemians
Substitute Robbie Doyle secured a point for champions Bohemians in the eircom League Premier Division clash at Flancare Park on Saturday night, April 19.

But it wasn’t an overly inspiring performance by the Dalymount Park side and manager Stephen Kenny will certainly be looking for something more encouraging from his team in the weeks ahead.

Indeed, Alan Matthews’ Longford Town played the better football for much of the game and were unfortunate not to go ahead in the early stages when Avery John saw his shot hit the crossbar.

However, they did hit the front on the half-hour mark when Brian Byrne netted with a powerful shot. Alan Kirby found Eric Lavine and he placed the ball for Byrne to fire home.

Longford continued to dominate in front of their home supporters and Sean Francis could have extended their advantage nine minutes into the second half, but his weak shot went wide.

Gradually, Bohemians found their feet and settled into the game and Byrne earned them a share of the points when he netted from a free-kick with 15 minutes remaining.

Longford Town - Dempsey; Dillon, John, Silke, Ferguson, Byrne, Kirby, Sheridan, Lavine, Francis, Keogh (Barrett 76).

Bohemians - Kelly; Lynch, Webb, Hunt, Coughlan, Hawkins, Ryan (Doyle 60), Harkin (Caffrey half-time), Keegan, Crowe, Rutherford (Morrison 76).

Referee - H. Byrne (Dublin).
