Feel free to post your views on the Galway premier league season 2007/2008.
After a couple of weeks Dynamo have got off to a good start, and having probably played some of the better teams in the league Corrib Rangers are doin well.
Are the teams that came up going to stay up?

From what I've seen so far, West look to have a strong side and will go very close. Athenry were disappointing against Rangers, Mervue are in transition and Devon are not quite there yet. Will be a very tight league with no outstanding sides, but think West's bit of physical presence could just edge it for them.

Mervue are in a period of transition as a lot of the better players they had over the last few years have moved on, and some of their younger rising stars have been snapped up by the Galway United U-21's. But they'll still be in the top 5/6 and may do well in the Cups. Pitches are OK from what I've seen.

athenry will be the team 2 beat,i think west and salthill will run them close, mervue and hibs are in transition but are still capable of beating anyone as hibs proved in the irish cup on sunday against athenry!

Five teams within a point of each other at the top of the table after last weekend's round of matches, in what is turning out ot be a very competitive league. Athenry laid down a marker with an emphatic 4-0 win over Salthill who remain on top of the table. Athenry are unbeaten with games in hand. Corrib Rangers and West Utd both had good wins to move into 2nd and 3rd respectively. Kiltullagh and Renmore both gained their first wins of the season against Hibs and Mervue Utd. Interestingly there hasn't been a 0-0 draw to date in the series of matches played.

Next weekend sees the 2nd round of the FAI Junior Cup. The Premier sides have avoided each other and should progress with Mervue facing the trickiest test with a trip to Division 1 table-toppers Oranmore under the stewardship of former Mervue legend Ollie Neary

East continued their giant killing run with a deserved 2-1 victory.

In the Premier League's only game of the weekend, Athenry came out on top in their clash with Kiltullagh. Their 2-1 win sees them move 2 points clear of Salthill Devon with a third of the season gone.

Athenry maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a convincing 5-0 victory over Renmore to stay top. Corrib Rangers and West Utd lead the chasing pack as they both recorded away victories. Renmore, Colga and Kiltullagh look set to be this year's relegeation candidates.

Next week the Oscar Traynor side travel to Donegal for their first game of the season.

Gaillimh Al
28/10/2007, 6:26 PM
The Oscar Traynor side had a narrow 1-0 victory away to Donegal on Saturday.

In the First Division, Mervue B remained joint top of the table following a 1-0 win over city rivals OLBC. Alongside them at the summit are Oranmore who maintained their good start with a 4-0 victory over St.Patrick's. Corrib Celtic gained their first points of the season with a win over a previously unbeaten Bohs side.

Next week sees the penultimate local round of the FAI Junior Cup. At least 1 First Division side will make it through as St Patricks face Corrib Celtic. Mervue and Dynamo Blues both come up against 2nd Division strugglers in Knocknacarra and CB Trotters and should progress with the minimum of fuss. West Utd face a tricky assignment against the students of NUIG, while 4th Division East Utd will be hoping to continue their giant-killing exploits away to Corrib Rangers. The only all-Premier clash is a tie involving Salthill Devon and Colga, where sparks may fly following an ill-tempered League clash.

Predictions:

Mervue/St.Patrick's/CB Trotters/West Utd/Corrib Rangers/Salthill Devon

The only Premier clash of the day is an intriguing tie between Athenry and Hibs.

I've seen a few of West's games and he's been solid but not great. Not sure if he is coming back from injury. But West are going well and if they're in with a shout near the end of the season he'l be a vital cog in their midfield.

A remarkable recovery saw Hibs come from 3-0 down to beat previously unbeaten League leaders Athenry 4-3 on Sunday. The return of Keith Ward to junior football after a spell with the Galway United U-21's has seen Hibs bounce back from a dodgy spell. This win opens up the race for League honours once more, although the situation will become even clearer following this Sunday's upcoming ties-:

-Hibs travel to the Westside to take on 2nd placed Corrib Rangers who are unbeaten at home and boosted by the return of ex Galway Utd player Brendan O'Connor. Hibs have games in hand and could potentially be league leaders.
-3rd takes on 4th as West Utd are at home to Salthill Devon. West have the best defensive record in the division but will be tested by a Devon side who know another defeat could spell the end of their title challenge.
-Pace setters Athenry are at home to Mervue Utd. Mervue are finding their feet after some early upsets and a win here would put them right back in contention. However Athenry will be eager to bounce back from last week, and considering their last 2 home games have resulted in 5-0 and 4-0 victories, it is hard not to see them gaining all three points.
-At the other end of the table, a vital game sees Kiltullagh at home to struggling Renmore, who realistically need to win this game in their quest to climb off the bottom.

There were no shocks in the FAI Junior Cup as St. Patricks are the only non-Premier side left in the Galway section. Mervue Utd have got to the final stage for the first time in quite a few years as the draw finally favoured them after years of getting harsh 1st round draws. The 3 teams who advance to the open draw should do well but it's hard to see a winner among them.

Athenry moved five points clear at the top after another emphatic home win. West moved into 2nd after coming from behind to draw with Salthill. HIbs made it 3 wins on the bounce with a good win over Rangers. Renmore finally got off the bottom of the table with a resounding win away to Kiltullagh

Sunday's Fixtures:

Galway Hibs v West Utd
Corrib Rangers v Kiltullagh
Renmore v Dynamo Blues
Salthill Devon v Mervue Utd
Colga v Athenry

Hibs will need to maintain their winning streak to keep pace with Athenry who have an "easy" tie away to bottom club Colga. West also have their eye on the title so fireworks can be expected as neither side shirks a physical battle.
Rangers must get back to winning ways against a dogged Kiltullagh outfit. Renmore face a Dynamo Blues side who haven't won in the league since the end of September. Salthill entertain Mervue in what is a must win tie for the home side. Mervue's hopes for siverware are in the cup competitions.

Predictions:

Hibs 3-1 West, Rangers 2-1 Kiltullagh, Renmore 1-1 Blues, Devon 2-2 Mervue, Colga 0-3 Athenry

i can't really see hibs beating west 3-1,i think it will be a close game and history favours west as they have won the last 4 meetings between the two clubs, all by the odd goal, including twice away from home in bohermore!i think west might just nick it again, they will be physically 2 strong, hibs are the better football side but west just don't know when they are beaten!
as for the other games athenry and rangers will coast there games and i predict 2 draws for the other 2 games!

Rangers keep in touch while Blues stay clear of relegation battle.i take it u were at the game so al if ur going putting up a report on the game?west 2-1 up with 10 minuted to go,then enter the ref(CHEAT)who decided to give hibs a peno, which was one of the worst decisions i've seen in about 20yrs of going watching junior soccer!hibs were a beaten team at that stage,it was a disgrace!whats the rule for kicking the ball away,i thinks it's a yellow card in the rulebook.hibs striker kicked the ball away at 2-2 was already booked, nothing happens then he goes on and scores the winner!

Gaillimh Al
18/11/2007, 6:04 PM
That's certainly one way of looking at it. I'd be a more impartial judge. Hibs should have been at least 2 up at half time. Polish fella who got sent off didn't deserve the first yellow. West scored with their first shot on goal. Calling the ref a cheat is harsh; the ball hit his hand, some refs give it, some don't. A draw might have been a fair result, but Hibs did have the better of the chances. Stumpy had a chance to be a hero but fluffed it, then tried to win a peno. The ref, in my opinion, dealt sensibly with most of what went on and there was quite a bit. It's a thankless job and not one I would want.

A more important question to ask would be why did they play 5-3-2 from the start, a serious tactical error that gave Hibs an early advantage.

Colga 0-5 Athenry

Athenry continue to fire in the goals despite the defections of Johnny Mernagh and Ollie Keogh(Mervue Utd)

Next Week's Games:-

FAI Junior Cup
Mervue v Corrib Rangers
St Patrick's v Salthill Devon
Dynamo Blues v West Utd

Premier League
Colga v Hibs
Kiltullagh v Athenry

In the FAI, the 3 "favourites" are all away from home. Rangers would be slight favourites going on form against Mervue. Mervue would love to get a crack at the national draw, it's just a pity they don't have the same calibre of team that won them so many trophies in the not too distant past. Salthill face a tricky trip to Caherlistrane to face 1st Division St Patricks. Although struggling in the league, they have already accounted for Hibs in round 2, so will be no pushover. West travel to Tuam on the back of a dissapointing League loss. Simon Murray is out of favour with the West mentors, but may be needed to provide more of a cutting edge.
Hibs and Athenry should continue their winning ways in the league. Kiltullagh could provide the sterner test, and were the last side to score in Athenry when the sides met last month.

Predictions:

Rangers 2-1 (aet), Salthill 3-0, Blues 1-0 -----Hibs 3-1, Athenry 2-0

Colga 0-5 Athenry

Athenry continue to fire in the goals despite the defections of Johnny Mernagh and Ollie Keogh(Mervue Utd)west played 3-5-2 on sunday and have played that way a number of times this season and last season, they did not play the 5-3-2 u were suggesting and as far as i know from talking to the management simon murray is not out of favour,he can't train at the moment due to work committments and as soon as he's back training i'm sure he will more than likely play from the start!

Gaillimh Al
20/11/2007, 7:07 PM
5-3-2, 3-5-2...not much difference really. They had wing backs who defended first, then tried to get forward if they could. Whether they used it before is a moot point. It didn't work. True or False? I'll bow to your inside knowledge on the Simon Murray issue. What's the story with Gary Fitzgerald?

west awake
21/11/2007, 3:47 PM
it's the same system they used to beat hibs the last 4 times they played,i think myself having watched the game the reason it didn't work is because,2 of the 3 central players for west had shockers,i'm reliably informed that the lad who got sent off for west was just about 2 be replaced, the main reason it didn't work the central trio didn't win enough possession to get the ball out wide and put hibs under pressure, the fitzy issue is a bit like simon's,where as simon can train an odd time fitzy cannot train at all at present, both are a huge loss in my opinion and would make a big difference to the team!

Gaillimh Al
21/11/2007, 9:29 PM
Fair point if they used it before but I have seen them four times before this season and they hadn't done it. If you have the central midfielders for it then fine, but Thomas Caldwell and Miko are both wingers in my eyes, and Vinny O'Connor and John Egan are full-backs. It was like trying to fit square pegs in round holes.
They are a different side to when they last beat Hibs, when I think they relied a lot on set plays. Now they have lads like O'Malley, they should get it to his feet more. He caused them all sorts of bother in the 2nd half.
Gary Fitz is a big loss, and the suspensions from the sendings off will hit them hard as they don't have a big squad of players.

west awake
22/11/2007, 3:46 PM
i'd agree with u al about miko, vinny and john egan, but caldwell is an out and out centre midfielder, the reason tom is playin out left all year is because there is only 2 left footers in the whole squad, and both of them are full backs.
they will struggle big time in tuam on sunday as the 2 subs who would probably replace the 2 suspended players are both away for the weekend.hopefully simon will get back in,i think he trained tuesday nite.i even hear the manager himself will be togging,he's played the last few weeks with the saturday team, they also have some ok b players they could draft up,but i think the smart money would maybe on the tuam side this week!

Mervue 4-0 Rangers
St Pats 1-1 Salthill (st pats won 5-4 on penos)

Kiltullagh 0-1 Athenry
Colga 2-2 Hibs

Mervue, fielding a number of "B" players who made an impact, trounced a very poor Rangers side. West came from behind to beat Blues, while Devon were knocked out by 1st Division strugglers St Patricks. Salthill had to rely on a late equaliser to bring it to extra-time, then the home side converted all their spot kicks while Devon missed one.

Athenry keep winning as Hibs slipped up with a draw away to Colga. Hibs still have 3 games in hand, but will now still be a point behind Athenry if they win them all.

Connacht Cup 3rd Round next Sunday:

Premier teams in action:

Corrib Rangers v Claregalway
Boyle Celtic V Hibs
West Utd v Glenhest Rovers
Kilkerrin Utd v Dynamo Blues
Castlerea Celtic v Renmore
City Utd v Colga
Strand Celtic v Salthill Devon
Kiltullagh v Snugboro Utd
Athenry v Roscommon Town
Swinford v Mervue Utd

- Rangers, even allowing for a dreadful performance past week, should beat Claregalway.
- Hibs face a very tricky assignment away to Boyle who are 3rd in the Sligo Super League.
- West face a Glenhest side who finished 2nd bottom of the Mayo Super League recently.
- Renmore will be big underdogs away to Castlerea Celtic, currently 2nd in the Roscommon Premier Division.
- Colga will find the going tough against City Utd, a mid table Sligo side who haven't lost a game since late August.
- Salthill also face a long trip to Sligo, but would be fancied to beat a struggling Strand Celtic outfit
- Home advantage could prove crucial for Kiltullagh as they take on Snugboro, who finished in the bottom half of the Mayo Super League.
- Athenry should prove too strong for 2nd Division Roscommon Town
- Mervue will also be favourites to overcome a Swinford side who finished third from bottom of the Mayo Premier Division.

Would expect at least 6 of the Premier teams to still be involved after this weekend, but in Cup fare anything is possible.

Keep records on Junior/Intermediate leagues in Ireland. Would anyone be able to confirm 2006/07 League Champions/Runners up ? (believe it may be Athenry).
Have viewed league web-site and posted request to no avail, but would like to get league history and details of past champions/runners up, can anyone help ?
Even if only posting details of your own club's championships or runners-up.

Would anyone know when first club(apart from NUIG) was formed in Galway ?
Note from recently posted web-sites Bohs,Hibs and Utd (pev Rovers) all date from late 30's early 40's. Yet when Connaught FA formed late 20's a Galway team was one of first winners of Connaught Cup (sorry first), interested to hear replies.

Weather permitting, league action will resume next week with 3 games down for decision.

Dynamo Blues v Athenry
West Utd v Corrib Rangers
Salthill Devon v Kiltullagh

The trip to Tuam is a potential banana skin for the Athenry men. A late goal saved their blushes on the opening day of the season as they salvaged a 1-1 draw. A game that will define both sides title ambitions at South Park as a draw is no good to either West or Rangers. Both sides have the talent but need to become more consistent. Devon should account for Kiltullagh with the minimum of fuss up in Drom.

Predictions: Blues 2-2, West 2-1, Devon 3-0

Hibs take on Boyle Celtic in the Connacht Cup while Mervue Utd will look to continue their good Cup form against Ballinasloe Town in the semi final of the Connacht Senior Cup.

The weather decimated 98% of the Junior football scheduled in Galway last weekend. The one game played in the Premier saw Salthill's slim title hopes evaporate as they were clawed back by a late Kiltullagh equaliser after leading 2-0 at the break.

This week:
League
Kiltullagh v Hibs
Colga v Salthill

Connacht Cup
Rangers v Claregalway
Blues v Kilkerrin
Renmore v Castlerea

FAI Junior
West v Howth Celtic
St Pats v Corduff Utd
Manorhamilton v Mervue Utd

In the league, Hibs are really the only team left with a chance to catch Athenry and cannot afford to drop points away to a competitive Kiltullagh outfit. Colga may give Salthill a shock in Clarinbridge.
All 3 home sides can progress in the Connacht Cup, with Renmore having the trickiest outing against Castlerea.
Three interesting ties in the FAI Junior Cup. West will be hard beat at home, with Terryland on standby if The Swamp isn't up to scratch. St Pats are capable of anything at home, while Mervue have saved their best for the Cup this year but face a long trip to Manorhamilton.

Happy New Year

Premier League action returns this weekend, weather permitting, with a relegation six pointer between Renmore and Colga. Colga have got 2 valuable points from recent encounters with Hibs and Salthill Devon, but will need a win from this game as Renmore have 2 games in hand on them.
Prediction: 1-1 Draw

The Oscar Traynor side are in action on Saturday in Terryland Park against Mayo. The Galway side scraped a 1-0 win up in Donegal first time out and although the Mayo league are currently out of season, it should be a tight encounter.

West Utd were handed a daunting task, even at home, when paired with Douglas Hall in the next round of the FAI Junior Cup. St Patricks have yet to play their game with Corduff Utd.

Renmore got the better of Colga in the relegation battle, securing a 2-0 win which leapfrogs them over both Colga and Kiltullagh.

Galway got the better of a dissapointing Mayo side in the Oscar Traynor, prevailing 2-0 with goals from Ollie Keogh and Keith Ward. They are now in pole position to top their group.

A couple of important fixtures to look forward to this week. Mervue play host to Hibs on Sunday morning in a game resheduled from September. On that occasion, Mervue failed to turn up claiming they weren't given enough notice of the fixture, Hibs were awarded the win but Mervue overturned the result on appeal.
The game is even more relevant now as Hibs continue their pursuit of Athenry while Mervue will need to get a few wins soon or they may be looking over their shoulders at the teams below them. Having Ollie Keogh and Dave Goldbey as a front two should help their cause. Goldbey has returned to the club where he was so prolific in the past at this level before and his presence is needed, as Mervue, if you disregard two 4 goal games, have only scored 4 in their other six matches. Hibs desperately need to win this game to close the gap to four points and their midfield duo of Alan Ryan and Pole Przemer Konik may well swing the tie in their favour.
Prediction: 2-1 Hibs

West Utd and St.Patricks are in action in the FAI Junior against Douglas Hall and Corduff. While this is not the same Douglas team that hammered Cobh last year, it will still be a tough test for the men from the Claddagh. St.Patricks are an unknown quantity who have disposed of supposedly superior sides so far and could pull off a shock.
Prediction: One team from Galway to progress.

In the Connacht Cup, Renmore and Colga tussle again for a place in the last 16. In another all Premier clash, Salthill travel to Tuam to take on Dynamo Blues, while Corrib Rangers are at home to Corofin Utd. Athenry continue the defence of their title with a trip to play Straide and Foxford.
Prediction: Renmore, Blues, Rangers and Athenry to go through.

It's Douglas Hall's second team, still capable of giving west a good game if west don't perform to there best
