Building work on the new 50,000 seater stadium could be finished as soon as late 2009, with the first game taking place in the spring of 2010.

The new stadium may not be known as Lansdowne Road after Browne revealed that the naming rights for the new stadium are likely to be put up for sale.

The sale of the stadium naming rights could end up earning the IRFU and FAI up to €75million over 15 years, however it is unlikely to be a popular decision among supporters.

Don't see the problem. The sporting bodies can make some money through corporate whoring and we'll probably all still call it Landsdowne Road.

I thought the first game was to be on schedule in Autumn 2009.
Now it's on schedule for Spring 2010.
How come it's always on schedule?

The Hard Rock Cafe's spinoff restaurant called "The Pink Taco" tried to sponsor the Arizona Cardinals (American Football) new stadium. The Cardinals owners declined. :)

If Staunton takes us to the Euro finals they might call it the 'Stan Siro Stadium'

Or Stan Hero maybe? Or how about the Government sponsors it and we take a leaf out of those cool creative French people's book and call it Stadium of Ireland? Nah, I think I'll go into the bank tomorrow to get a loan so I can christen it myself. Stáid Uí Luasaigh. Nice. (that's my surname as Gaeilge btw)

I'll always still call it landsdowne. The name may eventually fade into memory but by then hopefully the new stadium will have some history itself in its own right...

"Paid over the odds for a stadium that's too small" Road.

Do we think it's too small. 50,000 odd seems about right, sure we could sell out 100,000 for Germany/England etc but who wants 40,000 rattling around in a huge stadium for Latvia.

For soccer, I think it's the right size. Particularly if, in the future, the GAA would allow us to use Croker for the odd game such as Germany/England/France etc...

It's probably too small for rugby though. The biannual home fixtures against France and England will always draw a potential crowd of 80000+. Also, any autumn tests against the southern hemisphere sides would probably attract a similar demand.

If we wouldnt get 60000 to a football match then why is it so hard to find tickets for any of the home games???? (excluding friendlies) dont underestimate the irish supports they would go no bother...

Yeah - "Lansdowne Road" will endure regardless of whether its "official" name is "Durex Park" or whatever.

As Newstalk pointed out this morning - I thought some wouldn't lament the passing of a name associated with the English Middle / Upper classes - Lansdowne was an English Landlord. ;)

Is it through that there will be less tickets available for games to the new stadium than the old one due to increased corporate tickets??

Is it through that there will be less tickets available for games to the new stadium than the old one due to increased corporate tickets??Probably for big friendlies but unless they're adding 17,000 more corporate seats, there'll be more tickets available for competitive games.

If the early result are bad it may become known as the "Stadium of Shyte"
