following in a long line of pointless threads here goes....
As most Clubs have a nickname I would just like to (pointlessly of course) see peoples favourite and least favourite.....
Best Nickname:
Bohs: The Gypsies
Worst Nickname:
Sligo: The Bit o' Red

Mod - Please change title of thread to Best and not Bets (typo)
Oh I wouldn't say it's a pointless thread. Surely the point of this thread is another Galway slagging Sligo (or vice-versa) dig.
Derry-The Queen's Men ;):D

honestly isn't. you can read thru my history if you like and you'll see i haven't got the penchant for slagging sligo that others from my town do. i do happen to think it is a fairly silly nickname though.
best; none. Absolutely none have any originality.
Worst; Shels' claim to be the first team ever to wear red; "The Real Reds" and Dolan's Superisation of our real nickname; "Supersaints". Rebel Army is another of his poxy creations

Wrong. It was BL round about 2003/04. Although he has often insinuated that it was his ie. Since the 2005 players left . . . . the Rebel Army are still . . . . . . . .
I never heard him claim he made it up although someone said before that he has done . . . . . possibly you?
Add in the Stadium of Light moniker which is about as imaginative as Christmas present socks.

Fair enough. Is 'Bit o'red' actually used as a nickname, or is it just the name of the supporters club/trust? I've never heard anyone say 'we're playing the bit o'red tonight'.

I'm not aware of any other footballing team called 'The Candystripes', so surely that is both original and descriptive ? It's certainly no less original than Everton's 'The Toffee Men', and at least we've got the colours of our confectionary-reference right :)
Same with Rebel Army (original only in football though - not re GAA). Mighty Mons is fairly original - albeit a bit lame.
Agreed though that we're low on good nicknames that aren't either lazy abbreviations (e.g. Bohs, Rovers, Harps, Town, Drogs) or hackneyed nicknames used aplenty in England and Scotland (the Hoops, the Reds, The Blues etc)

i think that sligo fans use it but i agree i don't think anyone else does.
you can see the prem div nicknames here (http://foot.ie/forumdisplay.php?f=38)
and 1st division ones here (http://foot.ie/forumdisplay.php?f=44)
looking at it now i think Kildares name 'the Thoroughbreds' is fairly silly too - although admittedly it is better than, say, 'the Studs' or some such other Bloodstock related nickname!
Nicknames are usually stupid anyway, I don't see why some people view it as necessary for all clubs to have one.

It is Sligo's 'official' nickname.
You wouldn't hear someone say 'we're playing the Toffee Men/Saddlers/Hatters/Quakeers' etc re English teams either.
That's just made me realise that English clubs will always have an inherent advantage over Irish ones when it comes to nicknames. Many English towns specialised in and were famous for a single industry that the local football team has a ready-made nickname based on :
Northampton : The Cobblers
Luton : The Hatters
Sheffield Utd : The Blades
Walsall : The Saddlers
Scunthorpe : The Iron
Darlington : The Quakers
Very few towns in Ireland specialised in any particular occupation - and those that did were mostly in the industrialised north. Derry was a huge centre for shirt-making, for example - so maybe we should be called 'The Shirt Lifters......' :p

Well Kildare is called The Thoroughbred County and has long been connected to horses so it's not that bad. What about team crests - have you seen the Kilkenny one - it has a little soft black kitten on it that looks like our cat at home. Surely they could have come up with something a little more menacing like a roaring puma for 'The Cats' instead of a little fluffy joke.

I think Lim til I die suggested that his club should be called "the Blades" which I thought was funny but most of his Limerickers (sic) didn't

What about the Queenstown boys down in Division One! Personally I have the Sun-isms such as Drogs, Shams, Mons. Awful sounding (my main concern is they keep going and starting calling us the Gals, and whenteams beat us, we'll be subject to chants of
'nothing but our b*tch*s,
you're nothing but our b*tch*s
nothing but our b*tch*s,
you're nothing but our b*tch*s'
;0)

Missing a good few there, including the obvious one of The Students (or burger flippers) for UCD, as well as The Cats, De Towen and what ever you're having yourself.
How about Wexford, have ye a nickname or are ye just The Kids?

The Bit O'Red is Rovers official nickname.
Despite it not sounding too original, I may be mistaken but I don't think any other team use it, so it is unique.

He suggested we call our SC group that, and some of us did think it was funny, but most had objections because they felt it was a bit of a hooligan name, rather than a SC name. I personally disliked it because of my hatred for Sheffield United. Nempton who posts here pretty irregularly these days came up with a nickname for Limerick 37, The Limmings, which is fairly good I think, considering that club makes the lot of us want to attempt suicide at one point or another.
As for other clibs nicknames, Bit O' Red has to be the worst club nickname in the history of this sport, I don't care if you can dig up a prison team nicknamed the Child Killers because Bit O Red would still top that poll :p

Still hurting RF? We've never invited our GAA teams to Terryland, only to be stood up :o Maybe "the bit o' red " has something to do with the colour of your necks? ::p

That's Lovely Hurling nora
not only can he not write a message that makes any sense(see 2nd post), once again he says ''galway took there name frm the GAA''.... your wrong AGAIN. the GAA name is ''The Tribesmen'' coming from the ''City of the Tribes'', not ''Tribal Army.

Well it would have come from the GAA using it as well. I am not saying y9ou can't use but don't deny who was youing it first ! Dundalk is fair enough totally different county. I think Gilberto is turning into a likkte grren eyed Monster. :D

Poor RF, if it wasn't bad enough that Shligo GAA refused to attend the Showgrounds after his clubs attempts to jump on their bandwagon, they then lost to a club who really should be in the first division and hadn't won at home all season, and now the general consensus seems to be that they have a crap nickname too. :( No wonder he's throwing his toys out of his pram. I'd better leave this sensitive and important debate alone:rolleyes:

Very true, very true, I look forward to the day, hopefully it is not too long in coming, then at least the pain of losing to a club without a tradition won;t be an issue.
By the way, why are we all still living in the past. Thought the Genesis report meant we should look to the future, so here's one, who will be the big club down the line? Surely Wexford, after all, as Whtiney said, 'the children are our future'

Surely Shams is the worst nickname. It sounds pathetic and it's not even their nickname.
Can't say I like "the Seagulls" but Rocky the Seagull has always been a good hate-figure in the local community.

"Drogs" makes me puke blood through my eyes every time I read it and defecate through my ears every time I hear it. Such an ignorant Anglo nickname. "That's a fahnny name for a tahn, Paddy -- Droggidawh?"

It's come up a couple of times. I got shouted down years ago as did LTID in more recent times I think. I wouldn't be overly keen on it myself anymore tbh, maybe for something unofficial...
The lazy Lims/Drogs/Mons/Shams thing bugs the hell outta me too.

I never liked names like the Supersaints or the Thoroughbreds. They are so smug and false.
Usually, the media call Galway United "the westernerers" and Cork City are "the Leesiders".
Most people refer to Bohmeians as "Bohs" (and not the Gypsies) and to Shelbourne as "Shels" (not the Reds) and St Patricks Athletic as "Pat's" (not the Supersaints)
At the risk of being tarnished as anti-Sligo, I have never heard anyone speak the words "Bit O'Red"; I have been to many games in Sligo and know a few of their fans. However, it is totally unique and unmistakeable. Can we modernise it and call them the Red Bits from here on?

God you must be getting really jealous Gilberto, The Bit O'Red did invite theGAA team to the Showgrounds nothing wrong with that it was not like we were looking to nick their nickname or anything :D. hey are you any good at taking a line ball ? As taht is what you call corner kicks down there ? :D

Galway is nicknamed the City of Tribes and, afaik, has been long before the advent of organised sports.

Dundalk FC - The Railwaymen.
I quite like that as a nickname, comes from our club originally being the railway works team GNR Dundalk. As with those English clubs, it isn't just something made up out of nowhere. Infinitely better than 'Duns' anyway... :o
