Keely grabs Russell

Kildare County manager Dermot Keely has put the finishing touches on his squad for the coming eircom League season by snapping up reigning First Division Goalkeeper of the Season Wayne Russell from Waterford United.

It became clear in recent weeks that former Bohemians netminder Russell would be leaving the Premier Division newcomers due to contractual disagreements, and Dundalk, St Patrick’s Athletic and Kildare were all at the forefront of prospective buyers for the Englishman.

Keely admitted last week that he would be interested in taking Russell to Station Road if he became available, and the former Shels boss completed the deal over the weekend.

Keely said: “He is a Premier Division player so for us to be able to get him is a real coup. I’m sure he’ll prove a really good signing for us.”

Kildare have rounded off their pre-season games with successive defeats to Premier Division opposition (St Pats and Longford Town) but, given a series of high-profile signings in the close-season, they will expect to improve on their fifth position in their debut year last season.
