Does anybody have some superstition or superstitious habit that they think has an effect on the outcome of an Ireland game?

No not for ireland games.

However, My bro who is a united fan has a couple of such supersititions.

1) He insists that if he doesnt sit in a particular seat in his house to watch the united games, it will spell disaster for fergies boys.

2) He has to wear a united jersey while watching the games. And as longs as they keep winning he will keep wearing the same jersey for each game (e.g. the home strip) but if they lose a game he blames the jersey he was wearing then wears a different one for the next game (e.g the away kit)

As posted previously, as a kid I had a "Lucky Headband" that I brought to Ireland games from 1987 to the early nineties.

This coincided with a long unbeaten home run. I wouldn't allow my Man wash the headband as I was convinced this would wash out the lucky vibes.

Jack Charlton stole a lot of the headbands glory during that era.

Also, as we all know, the Ireland White Jersey is jinxed and can only spell heartbreak when it hoves into view.

As a young fella watching games on TV, we (the family) had a superstition that if somebody went to the bathroom during the game, we had a higher chance of scoring during the period they were gone. We called it "sacrificing ourselves". :o

It only worked once, and i was the sacrificee, when we scored against England in Wembley in 1991(?). But EVERY time somebody went to the bathroom, the rest would let out a half-hearted cheer to let on that Ireland had scored.

we had the same, or if the most intense ( or pessimistic ) person in the room just left the room full stop for a period of time they would score. It always worked, for as long as i can remember anyhow.

I dont really have any superstitions, but I remember watching the holland game, and going down to the church down teh road from the pub, praying for about 5 mins, coming back up and just after I got back to my seat, mcateer scored!!!!
Granted I missed about 8 mins of the game, but it was well worth my sacrifice for the team and Ireland, i did my bit for my country :D

TV3, certain pubs if i'm not at the game. Last game I watched at home (Holland, the trigger goal) we won. Should try that again!!

I moved to my current gaff in 2002 (actually my pregnant wife moved while I was in Japan!) and I've watched so many games in so many nearby pubs and until I watched us lose 5-****ing 2 to Cyprus in Fr Ted's in Kilburn I've felt that any one of a number of pubs have been unlucky. I've only just realised that choice of pub has nothing to do with it, we've just been sh1t.

Exactly. I gave up on superstitions a long time ago. What seat I sit in or what jersey I wear won't make John O Shea play good or stop Robbie Keane falling on his arse and moaning to referees.

Well not really football, but I did develop a superstion that if I backed Padraig Harrington to win a golf tournament he would fail miserabley and this has been confirmed on many occasions where he has got off to a good start and then plumeted like a stone as soon as I put some money on him.
To verify the truth of this I didn't back him in the last major (I made a post about this in the other sports forum) and he actually won his first major!!!

However after futher thought it appears that this superstition extends beyond Harrington and golf. Today I backed John Dayley in the USPGA when
he had made a good start and was 2nd IIRC, one shot off the lead, anyway he started the next day bogie bogie and finished 6 shots off the lead in 8th place.

But I had also been backing Ireland in football too and putting the jinx on them as well :rolleyes: so I vow never to back them again.

It seems I have an anti-Midas touch, I can put a jinx on any sportsman or club simply by backing them. I may even be able to extort money out of top sportsman and clubs by threatening to back them :D. Tiger Woods is now 1/3 on to win the golf, I wonder if it is worth giving him a call and threatening to put some money on him to win!!!

I could send him a photocopy of an as yet unplaced bet as evidence!! "Send us the money Woods or else!!" :cool:

During Brian Kerr's reign, myself and my mates had the same pregame routine involving eating a chicken burger in the burger king on o'connell street, then taking the same route from there to lansdowne road (up Westmoreland Street, passed college green, turn left at the bottom of Grafton Street, down nassau street, onto lower grand canal street, upper grand canal street, and stop in Slattery's).
The first time I didn't follow the route, we lost to Italy.

Used to be 18 bus from Sundrive to Landsdowne in the 70's. No lifts accepted had to be the bus. Dalymount the same. Watching away games (no money and too young) in the 70's ment RTE and closed curtains. No knocks on door would be answered. "**** off we're not in" would be the shout out the window if anyone called before, during or after game. Now I always must wear my Rovers shirt.
