Should he experiment further or go with his strongest 11 to prepare for the Czech/Slovak games? Personally I think he should give Colin Doyle another run out and go with his strongest outfield line-up and send them out for a win. Unless O'Halloran starts getting games for Villa, I think we're stuck with either Harte or O'Shea at left back. I'd go for Harte, because as bad as he is, he's better than O'Shea at left back and is a good bet for a goal.
1. Doyle
2. Finnan
3. Harte
4. McShane
5. Dunne
6. Carsley
7. Ireland
8. S. Reid
9. Doyle
10. Keane
11. Hunt

I reckon he should start with his strongest XI, then introduce the fringe players (Potter, O'Halloran, Keogh, etc) to see how they fare with the established senior players.

Lads, maybe this has been posted elsewhere but I can't find it: does anyone have details re: ticket outlets and general travel and match information for the game in Aarhus? Any advice or even links would be much appreciated!

Yours sincerely,
Terence

O'Halloran hasn't done anything to merit a starting place yet. Stokes should be given a decent run upfront in the second half, same with O'Halloran, Potter and Murphy and see if they can impress against decent opposition. Wouldn't mind seeing Alan O'Brien get a run out if he gets off to a decent start with Hibs too.

I was waiting for the first comment along these lines.

In other news, if you want an outside bet for the squad, Timlin has been playing regularly in Fulham's pre season games, at left full and left midfield.

Kilbane has been playing at left back for Wigan so far under their new manager. There's a good chance Stan will try him there for us.

Tets I seem to remember the exact same thing happening to Timlin this time last season (i.e played every single pre-season game) and, as far as I know, he didn't make a single appearance in the Prem...Have you seen him play? and does he have the ability to break into the first team this year or will we see him dropping down the leagues?

No, I haven't seen him play. He made one appearance for Fulham last season in the League Cup, before being sent out on loan to Swindon for the rest of the season, he was a regular starter until he got sent off at Grimsby in March and started on the bench from then on.

steven reid is back in training - as for andy last i heard he was attending some specialist in germany - would be great to have the 2 boys fit and back in the team.

will robbie carry over his spurs form to ireland ? if not - dare i say should we play a 4-5-1 and leave doyle up front on his own- drop robbie ? - opinions please

also would welcome ppl's opinions on o'shea should he start in slovakia and in what position ? - if he was to be dropped - then finnan right back - who left back ? harte /kelly etc etc

Fulham have just sold Franck Queudrue to Birmingham this afternoon so that may give Timlin a chance, unless Fulham go out and buy Leighton Baines.

They sold Quedrue but they bought Koncheskey, and Rosenior can cover left back also. Thats all irrelevant though because Timlin is a Left Winger, converted to a Central Midfielder but back playing Left Wing in every pre season game for Fulham so far this year. However at the start of the season he will be behind Clint Dempsey and maybe Lee Cook, plus Fulham have been linked with Chris Brunt, Seol Ki Hyun and Hammer Bouazza all of whom can play left wing. Not much hope for Timlin then, he should get himself a move to the Championship and work his way up like many an Irish player.

No. Andy is playing pre season and Steven is almost back from injury, although I think he is training.

Andy set up Charlton's first 4 goals in a 5-0 win over Gillingham last week. He also scored against some non-league outfit before that.

With some of Robbie's recent performances in an Irish jersey this would be the least he deserves but due to Stan stupidly giving him the captains armband, he is virtually undropable

lads do you not think that a lot of these players will be pulled out of this friendly by their clubs ?as has been the case before when it comes to games like this .

I don't think so. The wednesday in question is an international night and with the September games only a few weeks away, I think Staunton will play a fairly strong team tbh.

We actually need to win at least one of these games. It'd kind of help to have our top scorer in the team I think. Robbie can be infuriating but he's the kind of player we need for the run in.

What would 4-5-1 achieve, especially without Duff?

i just think we look more stable with 4-5-1 , as u say stuttgart88 , keane can be infuriating - with 5 in the mid i think we would cause the czechs and slovaks more trouble - doyle is a livewire - he wont drift backlike keane does all the time - keane is on fire with spurs pre season - scored again today - i just wish he would take the form to the green jersey

----------------Given----------------

O'Shea----McShane--Dunne----Finnan

---------Carsley-----Potter-----------

---McGeady---Ireland---Keane--------

---------------Doyle-----------------

Not a big fan of venturing too far from 4 4 2 for international matches but we have to accomodate our best footballers as well as looking for alternatives to Kilbane.

I'd start with this team with O'Halloran coming on for the last 20 minutes regardless.

After that I'd like to see Gibson in the middle and anyone from Murphy, Keogh, Stokes, Folan, loong up front.

I like the look of that team doctor but lets face it, Kilbane will definitely be shoe-horned in there somewhere (probably at the expense of Potter)...Apart from that I hope he sticks with the "attacking" 4-5-1 as it allows guys like Ireland and McGeady/A. Reid a bit more freedom to play....

I expect that too... I just hope that, given it's a friendly, stan tries something different regarding problem areas (or players) whilst trying to build on the positives of the last couple of games if you know what I mean.

a good old fashioned "players should be playing regulary" rule would be great, I think D Gibson will be in the squad, but with the midfield options bought in manu, he'll prob need to go,or on loan... does harte have a club at the minute,or he still with levante in liga 2?? finnan, dunne, mcshane should all be first teamers this season, not o shea.in midfield, will sven start ireland? he has signed a lot of costly players,so will prob go with them? S Reid will prob not be properly in action for international standard til after double away trip, carsley and k doyle, prob hunt will all be starters. is duff out still, i think he is.

Stan might be at Athlone this week to check out U19 players vs Chile, small chance one might become a squaddie!!

Alan Lee/O'Brien with good starts to season could be included.

Not sure about O'Donovan, prob not as he wouldnt be in the plans for double aways.

any chance for bennett if he gets regular chances to start at Southampton on loan??

not sure if c doyle or randolph are starters this season either, but murphy at scunthorpe will be, same level as charlton ath....

I don't think he should experiment for this game. We need to get our best team out playing with each other as we have rarely managed to do that.

I don't think he should experiment for this game. Me neither, with the exception that left back and central mid are problem areas even with everyone fit. We should look at emerging players in these positions sooner rather than later.

I also think Doyle or Henderson should play at least half a game in Denmark as Given's repeated injuries are getting worrying.

What's the story with Given, any news on scan results?

Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce has suffered another injury blow ahead of the new season after goalkeeper Shay Given was ruled out with a groin problem.

The 31-year-old limped out of the weekend's friendly clash with Sampdoria and has been sent for further assessment after being dogged by similar problems for much of last term.

``He has gone to see a specialist in London because we want to make sure just how much damage has been done,'' Allardyce said.

``He has been for a scan and it doesn't look serious, it's just a slight
strain. At the moment we only expect him to be out for a couple of weeks, but we won't take any risks.''

bloody Marlon Harewood...... I loved how that incident got smoothed over in the press last season yet the Hunt/Cech incident was front page news with Hunt (very nearly) accused of attempted manslaughter by Jose and Chelski. I remember the surgeon who operated on Given saying that he had only seen that type of injury in serious car accidents.

Stuttgart88
08/08/2007, 2:37 PM
Shay was very magnanimous and so were many on this forum, but that ball was never there to be won. It was an appalling tackle. Given was in control of the situation completely and Harewood's tackle was borne solely out of frustration that the game was lost to them.

Looks like Given will be out - not much doubt about that really. I think Stan should and will pick the strongest possible team (in his mind anyway).

4-4-2 is the order of the day

MY TEAM:
-----------Doyle-----------
Finnan-McShane-Dunne-O'Shea
S.Reid----Carsley----Hunt
----------A.Reid-------------
-----Doyle------Keane----

Stan's:
-----------Doyle-----------
O'Shea-McShane-Dunne-Finnan
S.Reid----Carsley----Kilbane
---------Ireland--------
------Keane---Doyle-------

However, the only 7 I can be sure of in Stan's team are the back five, Kilbane and Keane. Wouldn't be surprised if Carsley was rested. Still won't be able to figure out the swap in positions of the two fulls. Anyone shed some light on that??
