View Full Version : Why are RTE showing Derry's games?

Obvious answer is that it is the champions league, but why are they showing both games and showing none of either Pats or Drogheda's games.
My main gripe is that people in that part of the United Kingdom don't pay the RTE tv licence whilst those of us in Dublin and Drogheda do. Surely with RTE's public service remit they should be catering for those of us that pay their wages.

You don't pay the BBC license fee yet get to watch those channels.
Works both ways.
RTE broadcast on an all-Ireland basis and include Norn Ireland numbers for their phone-ins and text services and their advertising is implicitly priced taking into account Norn Ireland viewers.
Non-argument.

Regardless of them looking at it from an All Island approach they are our represetatives in the CL , They wouldnt broadcast Linfields games despite the All island thing

It's RTÉ Sport policy to follow our CL representative's campaign live.

Exactly my point BBC NI wouldn't show the Drogheda game so why should RTE do so for a club outside the licence paying area.
re the phone numbers thingy - purely a money thing coz they know rte will be watched in the north.
In my opinion RTE are not fulfilling their public service remit.

Not for free we don't. It would be part of a cable or satellite package.
I've no problem with them showing the Derry games.

Derry(regardless of it's location and the fact it doesn't recognise the league's national flag;)) play in the League of Ireland and RTE, being an Irish station, were showing them represent the league. I do think UEFA games should be too but that's RTE's decision not to show it.

Derry are representing the League Of Ireland, that's why RTE are shown it. Like it or not. At least they're shown Irish teams in Europe.

Can't believe anyone is moaning about RTE showing games. Derry are the leagues representatives, and I'm glad the match was shown. OK, it'd be great if they showed UEFA games too, but it's a welcome development in the last couple of seasons that there are Euro games shown at all.

After last night's game I'd rather they didn't, it would be easier to lie to my non-EL supporting friends about the standard of the league then :p

'That part of the United Kingdom' are you for real, or have you joined the Drogheda branch of the DUP with that type of remark ?
Also I`m sure you can pick up BBC NI where you live, and watch all the UK channels w/o paying a licence fee ?
As mentioned elsewhere, its standard policy for rte to show our league rep`s in the CL.

My moan is about having to watch the drogs tonight on a tiny little box on my screen via a live stream from San Marino TV, it'll probably fail several times as well. All this while Derry fans not traveling to Armenia next week will get the game served up to them while they haven't paid for it. Simple as that really, i've paid my licence fee, derry fans haven't yet they are getting a service from RTE. I know of course that it's not just fans of the particular club that will watch the game but i'm still pi ssed off that i'm stuck here instead of sunny Italy.

When Bohs played Rosenborg in the Champions League a few years back - RTÉ weren't even going to bother to show the leg at Dalymount until a concerted campaign by a few Bohs supporters to the Norwegian Broadcasters resulted in them even planning to send a camera crew across to cover it for RTÉ until RTÉ relented the weekend before the leg and covered the game.
They didn't even bother showing the away leg from Trondheim - even though it was offered to them by Norwegian TV
Simple enough solution - win the league (which I doubt will happen anytime soon to be honest)
Then maybe you'll stop whinging.

Did RTE show Derry's games vs Gothenburg, Gretna, or PSG - did they feck. Setanta and BBC did though. Rte are carrying on their policy of showing the Champions League reps. Is it a Derry gripe you have or a RTE gripe?

Incorrect, Irish football fans are getting a service from RTÉ. The CL is a bigger competition than the UEFA cup, simple as that. There's no anti-Drogheda conspiracy (that's reserved for all things Corkie ;) ).

Can I also say, I am sure their are plenty of Derry City fans outside the city who live in Donegal and other Irish Republic counties. So some Derry City fans are paying the RTE licence fee.

Good job RTE showing the game it was a cracker. Derry were brilliant and their performance and attitude were what should be expected of Ireland's representitive in the CL. Without stating the obvious it's going to be really hard out in Kazakhstan, eh..I mean Armenia but on last night's performance they can beat them! I hope some of the usually ManUre / L'pool couch potatoes choked on their TV dinners!

I get RTE in the North as part of my Sky package - which I pay for.
Therefore I do actually pay for RTE indirectly.

Seems like a strange argument as if you follow this logic to its extreme then they should show mostly Celtic games and the matches involving the big english premiership clubs!

BBC and ITV/ UTV channels are Free To Air on Satellite. Proper free to air as well, not the RTE lying version of free to air either (i.e. not actually free to air at all).
So you agree, Satellite

But it's still not going to happen;)

Just listening to BBC Radio Foyle, and they have spent the last 5/10 minutes talking in detail about Finn Harps and including interviews with Paul Hegarty and Dermot Keely.
The BBC covering sport from County Donegal? How dare they!!!

StarandCrescent - If the only audience RTE are serving is the fans of Derry City then you might have a tiny little point.
And I can't tell you how angry I was when RTÉ showed the 2003 All-Ireland final.

Can RTE show a UEFA CUP game if they haven't paid for the rights. They have the rights for the Champions League or is that only from the group stages.

this thread is completely stupid.how can anybody complain about derry being on the box!if they didn't show derry's games it would be an absolute disgrace...this is the biggest club competition in the world with an eircom league team taking part in it so its only right that they show it.and such a stupid argument about the tv licenses!this game attracts interest from all eircom league fans across the country, not just derry.im from sligo and i still want to see the gameand i would be very annoyed if they didn't show it.and finally best of luck to derry in the 2nd leg,do us proud!
