Just wondering what the format for promotion is?
Is the winners go up automatically and 2nd play 2nd from bottom in a play off??

Juts curious as the L37 website has L37 underlined so I thought it might be 2 from each div going into a 4 team play off for pormotion??

1 straight up, 1 straight down. 2nd and 3rd in the First Division play off with the winners taking on second bottom in the Premier for the last top flight place. So as things stand Dundalk would replace Longford and the winners of a Cobh - Limerick game would play Waterford for the last spot.

Why? Sure that's how Galway did it last year (even without the inconvenience of taking part in the playoff). :D

1st goes up autmatically, then 2nd plays 3rd in a once off game where 2nd are at home. The winners of that play 2nd last from the Premier League over tow legs.

well ya, both really!! I mean if it was two legs it would be different but say Cobh finish way head of Limerick in terms of points and then Limerick beat them by a fluke then it would be a joke!!

the system works well in the championship in england, it gives teams more to play for towards the end of the season, say cobh do end up running away with second spot, it still leaves l37 and harps with a lot to play for going into the run in instead of just having to fulfil fixtures, good idea imo

We'll miss 10+ open goal chances
while Paugie nets the winner for ye.

Would be worth it if we could score from open play but I guess one has to go in sometime and the referees are getting good at giving us penalties.

True enough, but it kind of defeats the purpose of having a league.

A league means that a team which has proven itself superior to another over al arge number of games (not always directly against the other team of course) will finish in a higher position and reap whatever rewards there are.

A playoff at the end of the league negates the whole idea.

I can understand it to some extent when the number of teams in each division is changing, with more being relegated than promoted or vice versa, but in this case the number is 2 up 2 down, so it seems completely unnessecary.

Wouldnt be complaining if Limerick made it up that way though.

I think play-off is a good idea. Should be a two-leg fixture though. It avoids a load of dead rubbers late in the season. As for Cobh being hard done by (cue fiddles), well it could be any team. Cobh could be the beneficiaries another season.

As for negating the need for a league - I don't know about that. You still need a league to decide the play-off berths. Its not like Wexford will be getting into a knock-out competition for promotion.:)

I'll be pleasantly surprised if the FAI don't put up Finn Harps for having nicer buses than the rest of us regardless of whether it's us, Harps or Cobh who win the play off to be honest. They have form after all

Actually they could couldn't they? Did Cobh get a Premier license last year? If they don't have one they ain't getting in. Plus from next year on isn't the league set up changing? I remember hearing something about cutting the Premier by two clubs and having a 10 man Premier League?

Great 1st half , Waters and Colbert were outstanding, McCarthy very busy up front.
Good stuff from everyone in fact, big difference in midfield as has been said,
Athlone were poor on the night though and the 2nd half was poor allround.
but what about.Ski, what the fcuk is he playing at? how much are we gonna get fined again for that crap on the sideline again?

I think it might be the manner that he uses when giving out more than anything. I am amazed that it took so long this season for people to realise that he has an abusive manner on the sidelines.

I hope the rumours round Jackman about where he is going next season aren't true

Two observations Battery Rover and myself had last night.....

First off, is the Lion (http://www.since1887.net/pics/LimerickMascot.jpg) pregnant, or overweight?!

And what's the story with the advertising hoardings around the pitch? Take away the free ones like eircom, errea and Live95, and there is practially nothing. Not having a dig or anything, was just struck last night about how little there was.

With regard to a few peoples over reaction to Ski's "sideline antics", embarrassing as it may be, its an embarassment I'm happy to live with compared to the alternative embarrassent of losing matches very other week.

Just look at our league position and tell me again you want him out. FFS get a grip, what do you think will hapen to us if we decide to change our manager now just cos we're a little embarrassed;

a) we suddenly go on an amazing unbeaten run and top the table
b) somehow manage to keep ahead of Harps and make the play-offs despite the unrest and uncertainty of a change of manager
c) free fall to lower mid-table as most people seem to expect of us anyway
d) any of the above, dont care really just like to have a bitch about something because theres too much of a good vibe going about and we have to keep things "real"

Feel free to say I told you so at the end of the season if Ski gets us no-where but until then show a bit of respect for what he as achieved so far.

What about Skee applying for the Athlone job last week Kev? Should we turn a blind eye to that as well? Just because he is getting something out of a talented squad doesn't make Arsene Wenger you know.

Is that true or rumour ? I've heard a lot of rumours the last few weeks.
If its true then it certainly alters my opinion of the man, but I stand by my comments regarding the sanity of wanting to change the manager now whatever the reasons behind it.

If its the case that Ski doesnt want to be here that will come across to the players and no doubt affect performances. I would speculate however that he is enjoying his job here but saw an opportunity arise to manage his home town team so he went for it (a proper kick in square in the stones to us if true) and now that it hasnt worked out its back to business, it now becomes a question of has he got over that distraction and is getting on with his job here.

As regards getting something out of a talented squad, we havent exactly had a talented squad up to now, with the notable exception of our back four (and of course Kevin Waters). So credit where its due.

jebus

Even before July though the squad was top half of the table quality at least, when you lok at the likes of Wexford, Kildare, Kilkenny and Mons than we have always been better than them, and we were as good as Shels, Athlone and Cobh from the start as well. It's one of the poorer First Divisions I can remember anyway. And from what I hear, Skee certainly went for the Athlone job, can't confirm it, but it's been as good as to me
