I'd go for Half Man Half Biscuit's "All I want for Christmas is a Dukla Prague away kit."

I'd go for Half Man Half Biscuits 'The Referees Alphabet'

"U is for the Umpire I sometimes wish I'd become ...you never hear the cricket crowd chanting "who's the b@stard in the hat?"

I'm assuming we're not talking about football records here - Watch Your House For Ireland, Here Come The Good Times, etc?

Right. Gimmick records by football stars/teams don't count. Ditto for records that are targeted towards a particular world cup/fa cup sorta thing.

Along with the previous Half Man Half Biscuit songs, I'd go also with 'I Was A Teenage Armchair Honved Fan', in truth you could have an entire section of Half Man Half Biscuit football songs and a good few classics in there. Two good ones with football related titles, but very little to do with football are Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros' - 'Tony Adams' & 'Shaktar Donetsk'.

Another HMHB one: Friday night and the gates are low.
I'm a little confused by the criteria. Do songs in homage to a player count?
If so:
Give him a ball and a yard of grass - Sultans of Ping
Strachen - Hitchers

Morrissey's We'll let you know doesn't actually mention football, but is about football hooligans.
And anything by Dario G, I guess.

The World Cup '98 song. Can't think of it's name but it's seems like every team's fans sing it.

You're in My Heart - Rod Stewart!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"You're celtic, united
but baby, I've decided
You're the best team I've ever seen..............."

How sad was that?

almost as sad as his appearance in Wembley on Sunday evening?

Dublin band A Lazarus Soul have a song about former Pats player (and high level gangster) Derek Dunne; 'Me and Maradona Dunne'

One I forgot earlier.

Ballboy - The Sash My Father Wore

Page three girls get you excited,
You support rangers and man united,
All you do is take up space,
With a stupid look, on your stupid face.

You had a girlfriend you really loved,
But you were a **** and she got fed up of it,
I don't know what you do,
But i know we'd be better off without you,

'cause you're a big, fat, bigoted arsehole,
You're a big, fat, bigoted arsehole,
You're a big, fat, bigoted arsehole,
You're a big, fat, bigoted arsehole,

You've got billy tattooed on your neck,
And a union jack above your bed,
You've got nothing intelligent to say,
And no-one's listening, to you anyway,

Cos you're a big, fat, bigoted arsehole,
You're a big, fat, bigoted arsehole,
You're a big, fat, bigoted arsehole,
You're a big, fat, bigoted arsehole,

Two brilliant tunes:
Collapsed Lung - 'Eat My Goal'
Kenickie - 'Millionaire Sweeper'

And a there's a couple of great lines in 'Ha Ha' by UK rapper Ty:
'Feeling that my left toe's equal to Pelé' and the immortal 'You stay rushing with Ian, I'm Ronnie Whelan'.
That's me fave hiphop tune ever anyway so that gets my vote.

I'm Immortal - Trash Can Sinatras. Cracking song.

out for a spell, i was slated. i'd lost a yard, i was hated
i dug a rug out in the dugout, lazing, I joined in the turnout
that's no life at all

out for a spell, got neglected, lay on the bench unselected
laughing, i joined in the squabbles, over the hill. I'm immortal
immortal, immortal, immortal, no life at all
i'm immortal and that's no life, no life at all

i took a kick in the confidence, down in the tackle i hurt
i took a shine to your big size tens
now all around the subject i skirt. gingerly, gingerly
and that's no life, no life at all

i just went out for a spell
i just went out for a smoke
i took a dive i was a sub
i thought my number was up
but i'm immortal, and that's no life, no life at all
speaking of tongues, baby (repeat)
i'm immortal, i'm immortal

Has to be Bob Dylan's Positivelty4th Street, which was written on behalf of Roy Keane and perfectly described Keane's and most fans views on McCarthy and Alf Halland

" You've got a lot of nerve to say you are my friend,
when I was down you just stood there grinning
you got a lotta nerve to say you got a helping hand to lend
you just want to be on the side that's winning.

You say i let you down , you know it's not like that
if you're so hurt , why then don' t you show it
I know the reason why you talk behind my back
I used to be among the crowd you're in with.

Do you take me for such a fool to think i'd make contact
with the one who tries to hide
what he don't know to begin with

You see me on the street and you always act surprised
you say hello, 'how are you' 'good luck'
but you don't mean it
when you know as well as me you'd rather see me paralysed
why don't you just once come out and scream it !

No I do not feel that good when i see the heartbreaks you embrace
if i was a masterthief perhaps I'd rob them
And now I know you're dissatisfied with your position and you place
Don't you understand it's not my problem

I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
and just for that one moment that I could be you
Yes I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
You'd know what a drag it is to be you "
then you'd realise what a drag it is to see you "

This kinda qualifies by default.... but am I the only person when they hear Nessum Dorma played who goes into a momentary trance and sees a vision of Paul McGrath moving in slow motion as he gracefully breaks up Italien attack after attack because somehow his performance in 1994 against them has in some strange way melded into my memories of Italia '90... it still makes the hair stand up on the back of my head 17 years on !!

Similarly, the George Michael and Aretha Franklin song 'I knew you were waiting'. RTE used it over a montage at the end of one of the Euro '88 matches - the final I think. Every time I hear that song it reminds me of Euro '88, before I quickly turn off the radio.

2 Fall classics:
Kicker Conspiracy ('how flair is punished' - about George Best as much as anything as far as i can tell, gracious from a City fan)
and, more recently,
Theme from Sparta FC ('we are not Galatasaray, we're Sparta FC'- I dream of being in a crowd chanting that)

Another Pings classic - Kick me with your leather boots:

Socrates and Selnopenhaur are really very nice.
Told you 'bout Ardiles and you said you'd read him twice.
Your stunning social conscience has me running round the bend.
Kick me with your leather boots,
Kick me hard again.

Please my dear - kick me with your leather boots.
I'm sincere - Kick me with your leather boots.

You took me to your bedroom and I got such a thrill,
It was like a sequal to the Boys from Brazil.
When we wear our leather boots we're so unashamed.
You smashing left foot volley,
Sends the blood to my brain.

Now for some anti-football lyrics from Belle & Sebastian:

I don't want to play football
I don't understand the rules of the game
I don't want to play football
I don't understand the thrill of the running, catching, throwing
Taking orders from a moron
Grabbing for the sweaty crotches
Getting hit by people I don't know
Sugar, I'd rather play a different sort of game
Sugar, the girls are just as good as boy at playing

I don't want to play football, funnily enough. From Storytelling.

They did redress the balance a little on Another Sunny Day:

Another day in June, we'll pick eleven for football
We're playing for our lives the referee gives us f*** all
I saw you in the corner of my eye on the sidelines
Your dark mascara bids me to historical deeds

I forgot 'The Few' by Billy Bragg which deals with what Sky would call '...the tiny minority who ruin it for everyone else' ...quite.

"My Neighbours shake their heads and take their valuables inside.
While my countrymen p1ss into their fountains to express our national pride."

Others?

"Song for a Family" from Inspiral Carpets debut album "Life" (1990) -

"See the lad on the Saturday terraces,
With his collar pulled up around his chin,
His side are two goals down and playing lousy,
yet he still believes his team are gonna win"

"Greetings to the New Brunette" Shame on you Stan, how could you not know that.

Also from Billy Bragg

"I had an Uncle who once played, for Red Star Belgrade" - "Sexuality"

"Strange as it may seem, I once had my football dream
But I was always the last one to get chosen when my classmates picked their teams" and "Now I'll never get picked to play, my song on Match of the Day" - "The Boy Done Good" He appeared on TV (it may have been TFI Friday) playing that song in a West Ham shirt.
