Given (Newcastle United),
Defenders:
Carr (Tottenham Hotspur),
Breen (West Ham United),
O'Brien (Newcastle United),
Cunningham (Birmingham City),
Kelly (Leeds United),
Finnan (Fulham),
O'Shea (Manchester United),
Harte (Leeds United),
Midfielders:
Carsley (Everton),
Healy (Celtic),
McAteer (Sunderland),

Big surprises in that squad eh...
;)
What team will he play? I'd guess;
Given
Carr, O'Shea, Breen, Finnan
McAteer, Kinsella, Holland, Duff,
Keane, Morrision
or perhaps he'll hold onto Harte at left back?

If Jason McAteer is the answer, then surely the wrong questions are being asked.
But I suppose he'll only be a squad member. (fingers crossed)

I'd have to agree .... actually there is not contest, anyone that says otherwise DOES NOT KNOW.
I one of the very first full games Connolly played for his country, he scored a hat trick after that he went down hill. when he went to Holland ... it was al over.
O'Flynn ..... any day of the week.

No offence lads, I rate O'Flynn very highly but I'm still waiting to hear a non Cork fan want him called into the senior squad... Connolly is still banging them in the first whereas O'Flynn couldn't get his game a division further down the ladder. I'd like to see him in the U-21 team but that's as much as I'd do for now.
slk sits back and waits for the backlash.
Well, I was being a tad facetious when I suggested J O'F, but to copy somethig that was said earlier, if Connolly is the answer, we have a problem.
He seems to be the opposite of Breen, ie, plays well at club level, shouldn't be allowed carry the gear for the national side.
Surely, with the amount of trawling the UK that Givens obviously does, there is a better option to be found?
I have to say I'd rate Crowe above him.

well. they wanted jof back recently - how ironic. probably realised their mistake. i dont think you can judge things as simply as that slk. outside of thetop few teams in england there isnt much depth in english football anymore. its the reason the same few english teams keep qualifying for the champions league. elsewhere its more fluid.
by your criteria staunton failed at dundalk. you have to look at the way hes playing now, not in the past. maybe irish coaches are better able to recgonise potential? (proof our countries yoth teams)
as for a backlash. after the mayhem you caused on the el board ill spare you from that :D :D :D :D

Sure, it's in the past now. Still don't think JOF has earned a senior squad place, for now I'd leave him in the U-21's.

I have to say I'm disappointed there aren't more young players in the squad. As far as I'm concerned, I don't care who's playing first team football or who isn't or where, we should have our most promising players in the squad. F*ck McAteer, call up Thomas Butler instead, he's got a future. So what if he isn't in the Sunderland first team. Call up O'Flynn, Thornton, Partridge and others. Who cares if they don't have "international experience", throw them to the lions and see how they fare.
This is what the Portuguese have been doing for years. Nuno Gomes was one of the stars of Euro2000, but he was hardly an established international player.
Young, skilled players are what the Ireland team needs for the future, and we have them. We don't need a team of Gary Breens (sing along), Kilbanes, Gary Kellys and McAteers - these are yesterday's men.
Hopefully Brian Kerr is the man to inject some youth into the side, and he's started well by putting Reid and O'Shea into the team. I hope he continues casting off the driftwood, because I don't think I can stomach a midfield of Kilbane - Holland - Kinsella - McAteer.

Holland is more than capable in the centre.
Even so, Kinsella.
Agree with some points though.

All in all I think he's picked the right squad.
The time isn't right to risk young players in the squad.
I'd expect the team to be
Given
Carr Cunningham Breen O'Shea
Reid Kinsella

Given
Carr Cunningham Breen O'Shea
Reid Kinsella Holland Duff

When is the time right then? Look at Ajax, risking young players in the Champions League. 19 year old Nigel de Jong got the equaliser at Arsenal and 20 year old Steven Pienaar played Vieira off the pitch.
Yeah but they are better than the older players at Ajax (I'm guessng, I haven't really a clue...) There is nobody picked for the Under 21s that deserves a place in the senioir squad. I'm not a fan of Carsley either but he is a regular for a team in 5th place in the English Premier League which is a damn sight better level than most. If Connolly wasn't picked we'd have 3 strikers (inc Doherty) and where's the sense in that. Pick the best players available for European games and maybe experiment in friendlies...

How can he pick young players now.
If he picks a number of young players now and they go out and don't get decent results from the next 2 games then what happens.
Look I have complete faith in Kerr. He has only played 1 game. This is his 2nd squad and already people are on his back about picking certain players.
It would be easy for him to call up a load of young players and get the popular vote but Kerr is a more capable manager than that.
He is giving everyone a chance. The current squad excluding injuries are the men in posession. They deserve a chance to state their claim.
The best time to give young players a chance is in friendlies.

I've left Finnan out. I think that O''Shea and Carr are the better options at the fullback. Cunningham and Breen will probably be the centre-halfs. Finnan may come in at left back if Kerr decides to go with O'Shea as centre half.
I don't think he will though as O'Shea has been the best Irish left back all season.

But he's not a left back Colster.
Whereas Putting Finnan left full would be perfect(ya), O'Shea would be compromised there.
He should be given his proper chance in his proper place.

O'Shea has played left back for ManU in Champions League and Premiership.
He's made more appearances in this season than any other Irish player.
I think he is more than capable to play left back for Ireland.
Finnan isn't a left-back either, though
NICKY COLGAN should not be in that squad AT ALL!
its a disgrace that an eircom league goalie isnt there.
i.e.
Mick Devine or the likes!
for gods sakes like oirland, why do you have one of the worst teams in scotlands goalie on the fekin squad?!!!!!!!!

Hmmm, curious, a Cork City fan calling for a Cork City player in the Ireland squad... ;) I mean if you're looking to pick an eircom league keeper, Devine can't really be first choice now can he? Barry Ryan conceded fewer goals with a team that finished well down the table. Saw Devine last year and thought he was excellent but I wouldn't pick him for Ireland right now.
Colgan's a decent keeper too...

Morrison is out, Wolves say Kennedy isnt fit enough to be called up despite playing and scoring twice on Saturday.
Now we have Quinn from Sheffield Wed. in the squad, IMO Crowe if any way fit should get a call up.

Alan Quinn's a good player but even so... playing for a team nailed to the foot of the First Division... so much for Brian Kerr proving a saviour for the eircom League...

If Crowe's not in the squad, I'd imagine he must be injured. Kerr said he would have gone to Scotland only he was injured, so it's clear he rates him.
Bazza for Ireland! :D ;) :D
