View Full Version : French fries or freedom fries?
With french opposition to the inevitable war in the Gulf, many Americans have now taken to calling French fries 'freedom fries'.
Which name do you prefer?

Course if I'd half a brain I'd've asked Colm to add the "Damn them both, we call 'em CHIPS, dammit!" option. :)
adam
Neither...
Its always been
"bag'a chips and a fish, please"
Jaysus, if you asked for
"french fries and a fillet of fish" in Murphy's, you'd get a dalk !!:D
BTW, isn't this fairly pathetic ?
God help ya if you asked Matty Kiely for Fries. he wouold run out of the place after embarrassing the fook out of ya.
I once made the mistake of asking for a can of rockshandy. to wjhich he repiled
" No, but ill give you a can of Heneken your majesty"
Chips is what I always call them, thats what they are called in this part of the world i.e. Peoples Republic of Cork, the Rest of Ireland, England, Scotland, and Wales. We don't buy into any of this fries nonsense!
The only time I ever ask for fries is if I'm abroad and go into a McDonalds or some such place. You have to spell it out that you want one large fries and one hamburger becuase otherwise the dopey (but damn good looking) Spanish bird behind the counter wont have a clue what you're on about. If you ask for chips they'd probably give you a bag of crisps.
What am I rambling on about???

is there some sort of hidden political statement in voting either way.
i just can't believe ye're discussing the proper name for chips.
Can i just veto the whole poll altogether?

As the new pain-in-the-arse American posting here, I say call them what they were always called, french Fries.
Am I opposed to impeding conflict? No, not really. we took it on the chin on 9/11 and I think it's better to snuff out the forest fire of anti-American sentiment that our previous President/Intern Violator let smoulder.

Snuff out Anti-american feeling?
And is killing innocents gonna do that?
+ The term anti-american should nearly always be substituted by 'anti-american-administration'.
Peace.

Who said anything about killing innocents? Unless, of course, you're talking about the 3000+ in the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and Flight 93.
Do civillians get killed in wars? Sure. it happens. it suks, but it happens. Is it the policy of the United States to seek out civillians in any armed conflict? Not that I am aware of.
Iraq has been left to do what it damn well pleases in the face of UN Sanctions for the last decade. Pres. Clinton's IGNORANCE of the situation and a limp-wristed UN enforcement policy can definitely be held accountable for the mess we're in now, and now it the time to fix it.
Hmm...reading that makes me sound like I'm a war monger. That is entirely untrue. I'd much rather see dimplomacy, truth and perserverance win out. The people of Iraq deserve a real chance at democracy and a leader who's interest is in his/er country first.
But enough about potatos.

we took it on the chin on 9/11
The ties between September the 11th and Iraq are tenuous at best, non-existant at worst. If you want to support war against Iraq, that's your prerogative, but I'm afraid the US and UK administration's linkage between Iraq and September the 11th won't stand up to argument here.
and I think it's better to snuff out the forest fire of anti-American sentiment
I respect that, and I'm glad that some Americans are thinking that way, but I need to say this: Anti-American sentiment was created by American journalists, American pundits, and now American citizens, not us. Americans created it, only Americans can cure it.
that our previous President/Intern Violator let smoulder
Clinton was a liar and a cheat, but I think you'll find most political leaders are liars and cheats - ours would widdle all over yours - because, sadly, that's how things work. But I respect Clinton, because he tried, because he didn't take the easy way out. I'll never respect Bush as President, but then I couldn't, because he's not the President anyway.
The fact that America didn't stand up to Bush when he defrauded voters out of their ballots, when he got his bro to stop the recounts, and when he got his buddies in Fox to announce that he was the President on spec, well, that says it all in my view. Land of the free my ass. No offense like.

Naw, no worries Vetinari. I respect your opinion as well. "W" has peed away any international support we could have had after 9-11, so it's understandable.
Peace to you as well. We're all on God's planet and the last I checked, it's ALL holy ground.

Um, the only thing I want to point out on this is that if not taking the easy way out includes the statement ; "I did not have sex with that woman, Miss Lewinsky" than I surely have a lot to learn.

Fair point. I'm afraid that I'd have done the same thing if I was in his position though, and I place myself both intellectually and morally WAAAY above Dubya. :)
Anyway, good to have you on board.

Refer to earlier posts in this thread re: Mattie Kiely's.
Only good reason I can think of: as a wind-up/p**s take maybe.

MacD's or BKs (can't remember which) fries were dumped out of India as they not vegetarian as contain beef flavouring.

Apparently people in India not like the taste of beef or something...

MCDs in India had to change there cooking fat, but also they had to stop callling it veg oil as it did contain beef extract.
McDs in India make thier Burgers with Lamb............... it's just not the same

Chips, and big up the french posse :)
Actually on the subject of the bile the US administration is firing in the direction of france right now, my politics lecturer had an interesting take on Rumsfelds "old Europe" jibe the other day: he reckons that Germany, France etc., which Rumsfeld called old Europe is actually NEW Europe, a society which in it's evolution has moved beyond the need for shows of force and the use of violence as a means of conflict-resolution. So that's it- Darwin couldn't have figured it better, us western Europeans (with the exception of Bertie Bushlicker, Jose Maria "I can't even grow a proper tache but want to look like Hitler" Aznar and Poodle Blair) are just futher down the ol' evolution road than our poor semi-neanderthal cousins across the Atlantic ;)
