Drilling into plasterboard

lads anyone done it? what are the do's and don'ts, I dont want a big hole appearing in the plasterboard when my flatmate goes to hang his "noticeboard" :rolleyes: in his room.

I've done it, don't know if there are any do's and don'ts other than common sense stuff like use the right bit and let the drill do the work. Don't force it.

Drill a hole through ( make the hole a little bigger than your screw ) the plaster board .

pop in a wall plug, hammer it all the way in , then screw in the screw .Leave a little out to hang the board off it .

Dont just screw directly into the plaster board or it might just get pulled out by the weight of the board

Find the supporting wood and drill into that or use thumbtacks.

They usually about 3 feet apart.

paul you'll pick up a little scanner thing in any decent pound shop that'll beep when you locate the joists.

Other than that there are little aluminium grips that you screw (not even drill) into plaster board and they distribute the weight evenly. Call into the nearest hardware place and tell them what you're doing. They'll sort you for well under a fiver.

is it easy to refil the holes and paint over afterwards, as thats why i will do eventually if and when my flatmate moves out?

Just tell the flat mate he cant put up a stupid notice board , what does he want a notice board for .... and don t say for putting notices on :D

Guy in my house wanted to thumb tack up posters i said he couldnt then he got industrial strenght tape to hang them i just told him he was 25 he cant have posters on his bedroom wall for god sake .

i know well anto, its hard to explain you would need to meet him. great lad, but some funny notions......

....i came home and the notice board was lying up against the wall and i saw written on it in big writiting "Do Shopping"....hmmmmmm you really need a noticeboard to do that dont you? he is a great man all the same though.

Did he have a "Hang up noticeboard" message on it?

If it's light enough, you can get picture hooks that will hammer straight into the plasterboard. It should hold as long as the weight isn't too much.

As well as that it needs certian type screws to fit into it.....its the weirdest most stupid thing ive seen.

Do NOT go into the plaster board. The plaster board is hung on a stud partition, and the uprights all nearly always 18-20 inches apart with cross pieces in and around half way up the wall.

Knock on the wall and as you go along you'll notice the difference in the sound and you'll know where the studs are (a more dead sounding notice where the studs are). Its ok to drill into them.

If you go into just plaster board you'll have some fool hang off it some night, trying to catch his balance after a pint or ten and you'll have no notice board and a huge hole in the wall.

make sure there are no electicity cables, gas or water pipes running through the stud wall where you are going to drill

Probably a plaster board wall plug. Several different designs, basically they spread out behind the plaster board to spread the weight, or you can get the spring loaded toggle type. I'd say try and find the stud, as while the plaster board screws/ wall plugs will take a fair amount of weight if you get the right one, they can be a bugger to get out of the wall without leaving a big hole.
