Happens here in Limerick on April 30th ...the traditional "May Eve" bonfire as it's known is now a thinly veiled illegal dumping fest.

When I was a kid in the 70's and early 80's we used collect stuff for it door to door after school on the day of the fire. Nowadays it starts quite early in April and adults, usually the types who claim they can't afford to pay for refuse collection but have 07 Boras in their driveways, take active part. Among the items dumped in a field near my home this year were a washing machine and a cast iron garden set ...plenty of good burning there obviously.

Personnaly I'd round the ****s up and gas them like the rats they are.:mad:

To be honest i never heard of this tradition,the only other time i heard of an organised bonfire in Dublin would be the night everyone went back to school and it was given the incredibly well thought out name of - Back to school bonfire.

Yes, fires all over Cork City last night.

Think it would be a great thing if it was organised.
I hopped in the car and toured Mahon, Glanmire, Little Island and the northside.
The one in Little Island was the only well-organised one.
Had a bbq and stuff. There was war when the fire brigade turned up wanting to put it out.
The rest were messy usually.
Washing machines are not flammable.

sligoman, its only a west of ireland thing, i remember when driving to dubline you would only see the burn out black holes in the grass untill the athlone side of ros town and then no more would be seen.

Ah the memories of robbing farmers tyres.....i think it was fairly obvious where the tyres would go, just no way of proving it!!!! Having said that you never **** on your own doorstep, so we would go further out of the town or the other side of town.....but same would happen the lads from teh other side of town would then come up and nick ours.....

We were voted best bonfire in 91......chemical train to ballin-a was passing by and the fire-brigade were called out twice and put it out, we just kept starting it again.

i thought they wouldnt be allowed anymore with not being allowed to burn fires 100 hundred foot from the road?

gilberto is right, St. Johns night is bonfire night for the country folks, while in the city its halloween that bonfire night is on.

As a kid we used to holiday in Furbo and I seem to remember there was always bonfires out there. The locals would have been out fishing during the day so there would be fresh fish (Mackrel) cooked on the bonfire, or is that my "Romantic Ireland" memories green-tinted by years of living abroad?

ya sligoman it sounds like that with a few lads at home so we over-emphasise "yer mudder". I stopped doiing all that after a bad incident :( i only used to do it taking hte **** but it completely stopped then.

What a complex, rich, jet-set lifestyle you've lead. I think I remember reading about yeer Great Fire of '91 award ...was it 'The Monthly Inferno' or 'Modern Arsonist' did the full colour feature? :p
