A Lisburn Distillery fan that I work with tells me that sky have made a deal to show some IL matches live next season! does anyone know more about this? I presume it will only be the games between the big two and the odd local derby.

Five live games will be shown as part of the deal with the IFA for Northern Ireland games.

As far as I know only a few grounds have adequete floodlight facilities for live sky tv.
Glenavon
Ballymena
Linfield
Newry.
At the time of the announcement they said the Irish Cup final would be one of the live games

That is definatly a good thing. The ratings for the Irish Cup final have been very good, especially when Linfield has been involved.

Just the 5 games being shown live then. live matches will probably get the IL more exposure which is good but it may also cause a drop in attendances at these games.

I would be very suprised if both the Linfield-Glentoran league matches were not part of this deal they are two of the biggest games of the season! the rivalry between the two is fierce and bitter so much so that it often leads to violence as happened at the end of the 04/05 season at the oval!

I'm aware of the rivalry but I was just wondering if it would still be shown on December 26th? Does the English Premiership not have a full fixture list on this day? I'm sure Sky would be more concerned with showing some of these instead...

I had heard similar but then seen on Sky's website that they are showing the friendly between the Glens and Man Utd live.

I thought that the english FA managed to put a limit on the amount of games sky could show live (especially 3p.m k.o games) due to the fact thaty attendancesat the games were slipping!

What rubbish. That was one isolated incident and the vast majority of games pass off with no incident.

That's during the summer and I would suspect there would be sufficent daylight for the game to pass without any use of floodlights.

Possibly put the games on earlier in the day.

well the use of often on my part was somewhat erroneous on my part, but in terms of calling it an isolated incident i would have to disagree, there is a history of trouble at such games IIRC it kicked off big time at the Linfield-Glentoran derby at windsor the last time Cliftonville won the league in 97/98. Seem to remember some other trouble in the early 2000s though i'm not as sure on that one it might have been Portadown and Glentoran fans.
But don't get me wrong I am not trying to make out that all trouble in the IL only happens when the Bluemen play the Glensmen! I am well aware of the presence of such idiots amongst other IL teams' fans including Cliftonville unfortunately.

Think your probably right there as the fixture list hasn't got confirmed times for boxing day matches yet.

As far as I know, as part of the new rules on contentious matches, it will be an early kick off and all-ticket. I'll try and find out.

In the 90s there was trouble quite regulary. But the trouble a few seasons ago was the first serious trouble for quite some time. There hasn't been anything worth noting since.
By and large, IL football is trouble free. Our biggest problem is Sectarian singing. Which I am glad to say, is getting less and less of a problem and Linfield(can only speak for ourselves) have made great strides towards removing it from our stands. Even when we played Glentoran, when we are most like to hear it, it was kept to a minimum.
We are not perfect, but we are getting their.

7.45 kick off, floodlights would still be needed.

Looks like the info that was given was wrong.
Although I wonder how the Oval lights are good enough, they are atrocious.

Aye I've heard mad stories from back in the day of people fighting up in the roof rafters of one of the stands at the oval!
Remember hearing something a few years about Linfield fans complaining about sectarian chanting by Coleraine fans! I think the problem will never fully be eradicated as it is a by-product of the toubled society we live in.

Bigger things to worry about than our performances in two games against one wee club.
I think winning the double 2 years running will help ease the hurt of last years performances against C/ville;):D

Again, I would suffer an O'Kane own goal if he repeats the season he had last season.
After a terrible start, he was in the top 3 best players for us. Personally he was my player of the year. But I wouldn't argue with Winky as he was tremendous to.
Lets hope for a great advert for Irish League football anyway. Although I know at least 2 bluemen who wont be at the match and will watch it on tv. Mind you, its not a loss to the gate as they don't go due to the restrictions placed on Linfield supporters.(which isn't C/villes fault, but some Bluemen prefer to be treated as equals rather than different to other football clubs)

I usually don't go to Solitude. If I could travel there on my own accord without having to meet at Windsor and/or Ballysillan and be herded onto buses like cattle I may consider it. Same can be said for Donegal Celtic's Suffolk Road venue. Apparently we're living in "peace" now so its about time we were treated as equals.
Edit: Suffolk Road was basically just down the road from me so I didn't see any sense on having to head over to Windsor. Completely pointless.

It is strange all the restrictions but security concerns is the line given to explain it all! there are always plenty of Bluemen who make the trip over to Solitude! the Blues are the only ones I've ever seen fill the away stand at Solitude although the crues brought a big enough crowd at the last Boxing day derby as well.
I take it Glentoran fans don't have the same sort of restrictions when they are going to Solitude/DC?

No, which is another reason as to why I don't go. Glentoran in recent years have been involved in more and more crowd trouble with many sets of supporters from, Linfield, Portadown, Cliftonville, Omagh Town and just recently AIK Solna. Lovely bunch, yet its us (Linfield) treated like animals. Probably just because red, white and blue is our colours... but sure there is "peace"...

No, we don't. Despite having what Steve believes are the IL's most virulent fans, there has not been a major incidence of crowd trouble between Glens and Reds since 1978 at Solitude. A ground, incidentally, we have NEVER been banned from.
Glentoran bring the biggest away crowd to Solitude each season.

I never made any references to any other clubs or crowd trouble.
Incidently we haven't had any bother in years ourselves at Solitude, which makes the security arrangements a mockery.
Also you cannot blame Linfield on the reason why we never went to Solitude for so many years. So don't even try that one. You know fine rightly that it was Linfield supporters that got attacked by the residents of the area(and probably outside the area).
But it is now in the past and Linfield Cliftonville matches pass off with no incidents.

What actually happened at Coleraine and Larne?
Also what happened on Boxing day? I wasn't at Coleraine but was at the other 2.
I genuinely don't know what happened at Coleraine. I cannot recall any bother with larne and I cannot recall anything on Boxing day.
I don't think it would be wise mind you from a Glentorans point of view to compare incidents as it is a widely known Glentoran have an element that cause trouble more often than other teams(I'm not for one second saying Glentoran are the only team with an element, I sure as hell know Linfield have a bad element, but I think you have to agree their are so called Glentoran supporters who have put the Glentoran name through the mud much more often than any other teams bad elements)

Omagh - Roy McCreadie getting abuse, spat at and things thrown at him.
