Jason McAteer has announced his retirement.
McAteer became a free agent at the end of last season when League One side Tranmere Rovers opted not to renew his deal as player/coach at Prenton Park.
And he has decided to hang up his boots after a 16-year playing career. :(
People can say what they like about him but I am sure none of us will ever forget his goal againist Holland at Lansdowne .

Best of luck Jayo, we will never forget.
I heard he's doing his coaching badges now, and had taken the reserves for training a few times at Tranmere, anyone confirm?

Have to respect the man for winning our first World Cup.
Best of luck.
Incidentally, I thought he might have been the type who'd enjoy a final year or two in the eL (on the **** in Dublin, but sure how bad).

i was a young fella working in a pub that day and didn't see the goal but the roar was unreal... louder than any i've heard in the place before or since. Never mind anything else, it's that i'll remember him for.

I thought he was very decent central midfielder when he first came to prominence with Bolton. How did he end up on the right side?
He had some (naive?) guts winding Keano up silly.

The point I made earlier on the Irish Abroad thread. Liverpool totally ruined him, not the first Irish prospect to stumble at the fields of Anfield: Bab, Kennedy etc. I still dread Irish players transfered to Liverpool.
At least the Keane thing showed his passion.
Cheers Jason, I'll always remember you goal in the Holland game.

Great servant for Ireland. That goal V Holland was one of the most important goals ever scored by any Irish player
He was also excellent when he came on against the Mexicans in '94, unlucky not to score and provided the cross for Aldridge's consolation.
Not the sharpest tool in the box though

Legend.
What a game, that Holland one. Never saw the goal with everyone standing up in front of me - just heard the cheer. Still can.

His enthusiasm was infectious. I think he played it up a bit though. Met his old man in the Central Hotel after agame once and had a few beers. Good crack.

that sounds remarkably like something an Irish soldier might say... :D
agree about him being destroyed by Liverpool (though his crossing was excellent). He was the rising star of central midfield when he played for Bolton before declaring for us. I used to hope that Charlton or McCarthy would play him in centre mid. I think McCarthy might have tried him there in a friendly - i cant remember who it was against. I think he may have come on as a sub... anyway, he played really well and gave a killer pass for a goal. Anyone remember that or have i smoked too much?

legend! scored 2 of the most important (and best) goals I can remember for us...provided some great entertainment on the way (karate kick against Macedonia) and seemed to genuinely care about playing for us....would agree about Liverpool being his downfall, thought he would have been quite a handy CM for us...
Is it true about the coaching badges thing? Surely then, given that he's reserve team coach for the mighty Tranmere he must be more qualified than Stan???
MCATEER FOR IRELAND!! :)

Wow - many thanks, amazing stuff. For some reason, the way it was explained to me, I always thought it was off the ball!!!! So its not as bad as I thought!
He was certainly dedicated.

First time I've seen the karate kick. MacAteer had the knack to be totally focussed on the ball and make a collision look accidental, he failed spectacularily there, nothing less than GBH. But he succeeded to split Cocu's forehead at Landsdowne rd. having to make contact with a backhander from a difficult angle. He had perfected the look of contrite innocence.

Just watching that video -the bare concept of the Orange Jersey-Black Shorts-Black Socks isn't a bad one at all if they'd just do away with the go faster stripes, the fluorescence and just use regular Orange (or is it some self deprecating Irish tarmaccers joke?)

Won by McAteer, but his feet were up. A free-kick has been awarded...And Roy Keane has been sent off.
:D
Some mop on Roy's head as well.
Another problem with the orange jersey was that a robbery in the Umbro warehouse meant that 95% of people who wore the jersey got them through dodgy circumstances.
Agree with others that I've no problem with a less cluttered, Netherlands-style orange jersey coming back at some stage.

He also did a flying Steven Seagull style Karate chop in one of the games for the 2002 WC qualifiers. Think it was against Holland after he scored but could be wrong. Anyone remember which game it was I remember laughing with me mates particularly because of his previous exploits.
A martial arts legend right up there with the likes of Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and Hong Kong Phooey.

He played centre-mid in the 3-0 win over Macedonia in 1997 - had a great game and got one of the goals from a sublime pass from Alan McLoughlin, who was in the form of his life for those 12 months or so.
Did Goodman or David Kelly score the 2nd goal that day? McLoughlin got the first If I remember correctly.
Goodman went past a couple of defenders to set up Kelly to score from the edge of the area. McLoughlin scored the first alright with a diving header.

this is the man who according to his newspaper column 'feigned fitness' before the world cup in 2002, lied to McCarthy in order to play against Cameroon and encouraged Mark Kennedy to lie about his fitness so that he too would make the squad.

Trigger was a good servant to Ireland but this episode reflects badly on him.
He was clearly unfit in the first half against Cameroon and was letting us down by playing in the first place

yeah forgot about that cameroon incident-very poor on his part but maybe he just thought he deserved it or something-besides im sure mccarthy and coaching staff really knew he wasnt up for it. he was flattened by that nigerian in that warm up game and could barely walk.
mccarthy should have taken him off well before half time in that game having seen him limp around after only 10 mins.
anyway thats history. will always remember his 2 goals against the dutch.

Indeed. One of my reasons for not being ever so keen on him. I got the impression (from reading said columm) that he seemed to think he had a devine right to play in the World Cup after his goals against Holland and winning the penalty against Iran (by diving if i remember rightly).
Theres no 'I' in 'team' Jason.

What player with a sniff of a chance of playing wouldn't have sold their mother to get out on to the pitch. It's up to the manager to take the final decision based on fitness tests.

One of the reasons for not ever being keen on him was right at the end of his career?
That's foresight for you.
