Stephen Gavin has signed for Athlone, anyone know anything about him. Former Longford and Sligo player.

Oh No

I know nothing about him but I hope he's not just another average guy who can't get a game elsewhere.

We need to sign a few class backbone players and build around them.

Shouldn't you rename yourselves Athlone Town Incorporating Longford Town Retirement and Rejects FC? :D

Decent enough first division player and should do well for youse - wasn't quite up to the mark in the premier, but even then he had his good games.... Good signing I'd say...

he'll be a good signing... He started last season with Sligo but with starting a new job in Castlebar, the game took second place... He's eager to get back into the game and judging by what i've heard looking forward to playing for Athlone... It's certainly not a case of not getting a game anywhere else and mearly a case of being close to where he wants to be... watching the town on a Saturday night... ;-)

He was a good guy to come on for us and he is certainly more than capable of rising above the average mucker at Athlone... ye should be greatful... support him...

In all fairness Macy it wanst that long ago that Longford was
a haven for former Athlone rejects and OAP's ...

Eric Smyth, Mark Devlin spring to mind straight away.

Even the legendary Mickey O'Connor and Denis Clarke done
stints at Strokestown Rd after they'd come to the end of thier
LoI footballing days.

More recently Trevor Moylan ... dunno what ye done to him but
from what I've heard he isnt half the player now as he was
before he went to youse and Eirc Molloy was a bit shakey when
he left Flancare!

Good to see Silky doing well though, he's a quality defender.
Pity Paddy Mul woldnt have anything to do with De Origional Town!

I agree Ash, just shows the reversal of fortunes....

Molloy, infairness he was shakey when he arrived - Lets blame Bucko!

Silke, I agree but not sure he's better than Fergie or Avery (Que long debate about Avery moving forward into midfield from Xlex ;) )

What exactly is the story with Paddy and Scumlone? Decent prospect, but not convinced he's near the finished article yet....

Dunno the full ins and outs of it but from what I've been told tis
a bit of a Mexican stand off.
Apparently his Dad had a falling out with De Town many moons
ago and theres a bit of a hatred still running deep.

Although last time I was speaking to Paddy (dont really know him
but mates of mine do) he said he'd play for Scumford over
Athlone to get Premier Division football to keep his place in the
International set up ... which is fair enough.

Aye, he's still a bit raw but a good prospect to be sure.

It's great to see mature comments and jovial banter between supporters. I mean SCUMlone and SCUMford, what sheer satarical genius!

Gavins qualities as a player have been covered already, so'll I just say that he's a good loyal player but if your female avoid him in the night clubs............ Blazers just won't be the same without his antics!!!!!!!

LongSCUM and LoSCUMrd SCUM ;)
