From eleven-a-side (http://www.eleven-a-side.com/eircomleague/irish_soccer_detail.asp?newsid=27953):

College move in on Birmingham winger

UCD manager Pete Mahon is keen on bringing Pat Kavanagh back to the club after a move to Birmingham City failed to work out for the young winger.

Kavanagh burst on the scene at Belfield Park after joining from Wayside Celtic last season and left for Birmingham in January with high hopes of making the grade.

However, he was unable to convince Brum boss Steve Bruce and, having parted company with the St Andrews side at the end of their promotion-winning season, was back at Belfield earlier this week.

Mahon told the Irish Sun: “Pat training with us this week. I’m not sure what his plans are as I didn’t get a chance to speak with him.

“But I will speak to him just before the league resumes after the break and see what he wants to do. Hopefully, he would like to come back to us and we’d be happy to have him.”

Mahon’s side take on resurgent Waterford United at the RSC on Friday evening, when UCD will aim to get back on track following their defeat to Bray Wanderers earlier this week.

What place is there for Kav in the team though? I reckon Conan is a better player.

Poor student

I can think of a number of reasons why this is a good idea

1) Conan is one injury away from being sidelined
2) Conan might get suspended if he gets enough disciplinary points
3) The best way to keep Conan playing well is to let him no he can't just swan around and keep his place in the team.
4) Impact substitute?... anyone?
5) Conan can also play in one or two other positions if needed and given the plague of centre-midfield injuries at the club lately any cover for anything close to that sector of the team has got to be good.
6) We can actually sign him on professional terms in July this time around so next he leaves the club for a cross channel trial we WOULD get a transfer fee.

Yes, but you have to look at it from two other perspectives, will he look for a wage that would only merit paying a first teamer and will he want to be a squad player?

We need back up in case Conan gets injured but there's no point getting someone like Kav to warm the bench as it wouldn't be worth the money we would be paying him. As it stands we have Shane Fitzgerald as back up so I wouldn't be too dissapointed if he had to fill in for a few games as is a good prospect. Finn could also do a job there IMO.

Yeah he's a very good player. He's very quick and tricky and would cause any defence problems. He signed for Birmingham in January and was one of their best players in their reserves. He was released when they got promoted to the Premiership. He only played 10 games for us last season but scored 4 goals.

Great signing for Bray. They're building up a handy little UCD B side. Kind of like Drogheda.
