Brian Shortall has re-signed after returning from the States.

No great need for him, but no harm having that bit more depth.

No great need for him, but no harm having that bit more depth. If Kenna, McNally or McMillan were injured we'd have been stuck for a sub at centre back, so he's definitely a useful addition. He did well with us before too.

It'll end this nonsense of playing Tony Mac at the back. He's only fit every 6 weeks we can't see that occasion wasted!

We have a ridiculously deep squad at this stage.:D

I wouldn't go that far. We now have a decent centre back situation where as before I felt we were one short.

Well compared to most eL clubs we'd have one of the deepest squads in the league. We have two decent keepers, four decent centre halves, two decent left backs, not too strong at right back although Kenna could be deployed there and Last has played there, 5 decent centre mids, two decent left wingers, Fitzgerald and Bogdan could also backup for Conan, three decent strikers. That's without counting the likes of Forsyth, Moran, Podge to come back etc. Our first 11 aren't world class but we have adequate backup for every single position.

I see some overlapping there between centre backs and full backs unless you're still counting Tony Mac as a defender!

Right back: Alan Mahon. If he was injured I suppose Kenna would have to play out there but the extra centre backs could let you do that. Pete may just throw Last in there.

Centre Back: Conor Kenna, Alan McNally, Brian Shorthall, Evan McMillan

Left back: Ian Bermingham and Killian Gallagher.

Not too much overlapping.

Right back:... Pete may just throw Last in there.Doubt it, he's played Kenna there any time that Mahon has been out.

Last isn't a right back either. I know he played there in the League Cup but that was his first time. Damien Kelly is right back for the U-21s.

Ok, but that aside my point is that this is the strongest UCD squad I've ever seen. We've been able to handle injuries well and still put out a good side.

I'd agree with that.

Yes but you're both whippersnappers who haven't much to compare it too.

I remember benches with Ken, Glen and no sub keeper. Them were the days!

Or being unable to field an U21s side under Paul "youth development my ass" Doolin.

Anyone else think now that he has re-signed we should move Kenna to right back and slot him in centre back?

John83

Not particularly. I prefer to see Kenna used where he's best, and Mahon's been fine at right back recently.

No, no, no and no. Kenna is a quality centre back and such a good player must be deployed in the position where he will perform optimally. It would be a shame to do otherwise.

Well my point is that although Kenna is stronger at CB at defence with him, Shorthall and McNally is stronger than Mahon, him and McNally.

No, it isn't.

No, it isn't.
It clearly is.

Anyway after Shorthall playing right back and being solid on Friday it would be worth trying again as it would be better than moving Kenna out to right back if he can do a job there.

Did Shorthall ever leave us as such? Did he ever head to the US or get a trial elsewhere?

He did, but didn't get a club and so has come back now.
