was this peter murphy in malaysia u20 squad in 1997. Was with Blackburn Rovers and St Joey's Boys in Dublin? If so, there's an obvious reason for his inclusion.

which is?

Pat Devlin. Ya he was with Blackburn alright so I'd say that's him. Looks like a left footer too. Might be useful.

He's twenty seven this year, playing in the third tier. I'm pretty sure we could have got someone at a higher level or another up and coming youngster.

Yeh, that's it! I think he used to play at left back alright.

You were born in Dublin and got picked up form Ireland by Blackburn. How did that come about?

There was a scout for Blackburn in Ireland called Pat Devlin. He managed a football team over there called Bray Wanderers which is around my area. He's good friends with Kenny Dalglish who was manager when I signed for Blackburn. The scout mentioned to my mother and father about me going over for a trial, they broke it o me and I was thrilled to go over. I went for a first trial and enjoyed myself there, then came over a few more times. I tried out at a few other clubs but Blackburn was the place to be with the best coaches and the best facilities and all.

Is Devlin his agent?

Is Devlin his agent?

I believe he prefers term "Advisor".

Pat Devlin seems to be the puppet master behind Stan now. An Ireland cap might get Murphy a bigger contract & of course his advisor should be good for a bigger cut too.

I thought Stauton could not go any lower but he was determined to prove me wrong!

:D This is a joke right??? Does Staunton think the English 3rd tier is better than the Eircom League?

Gretna, who Derry beat 5-0 in Scotland, are favourites to sign him. Staunton is a farse. As for Bennet, he would not make the Drogheda or Derry teams!!!

Staunton should go and bring relegation expert Devlin with him!!

He would and hed be the best defender they have. One of the most underrated players weve had.

Reading fans expecting him to break into the first team next season

Might be wrong, thought he was in squad. Can anyone confirm?

Bennet was one of the best defenders in the eL before he left but hes been playing reserve team football for the last few months against kids too old for the youth teams.

27 in October, played over 200 games for Carlisle. Scored 2 goals this season and got 6 bookings. Looks like he'll be moving to a higher level. Sounds like Carlisle really wanted him to stay but couldn't come up with the cash. As far as I can make out he's a full back.

He played centre-half for the past two seasons, though previously he was used at full-back and in midfield. Apparently a tad on the slow side as well.

Good stuff Dodge. Got my wires crossed with Stephen Murphy. Would Hawkins not have been worth a shot even?

It smacks of Devlin-ism to me. does stan or anyone in the FAI not see how blatantly obvious this is that devlin is pushing players like murphy into the squad?im sure the lad couldnt believe his luck.devlin probably went thru his phonebook and this is the only lad who hasnt gone on holidays yet.
It p8sses me off that a man like Pat Devlin has so much power when it comes to squad selection. has he even got many badges?? did he ever do anything of real note in Ireland?I could have been a scout for a premiership team and sent over 30 lads a year on trial and you can be damn sure that some of them would be good enough to play English League 1.... rant over

Revised Squad:
Nicky Colgan - Barnsley
Wayne Henderson - Preston North End
Colin Doyle - Birmingham City
Stephen Kelly - Birmingham City
Alex Bruce - Ipswich Town
Joseph O'Cearuill - Arsenal
Stephen O’Halloran - Aston Villa
John O'Shea - Manchester United
Kevin Kilbane - Wigan Athletic
Darren Potter - Wolves
Joe Gamble - Cork City
Stephen Hunt - Reading
Stephen Gleeson - Wolves
Alan O'Brien - Newcastle United
Kevin Doyle - Reading
Shane Long - Reading
Daryl Murphy - Sunderland
Anthony Stokes - Sunderland
Andrew Keogh – Wolves
Alan Bennett – Reading
Peter Murphy – Carlisle United.

Those in bold already capped at senior level. It's a poor attempt at a squad, O'Shea and Kilbane look like imposters in it! Alan O'Brien there again. Pat Devlin's influence becoming ever more evident

Peter Murphy has been an ever present player at his time Carlisle. He is at present unattached.
Have seen him play many times and is not a bad player at all.Good
left foot and is tough in the tackle.Don't know if he is International standard
tough. Was surprised to hear he was in the squad. He'll surely get a club now after this.

Isn't Keogh also "advised" by Devlin?

yeah, the guy who had €12million rated Zigic in his back pocket for 90 minutes was useless. steve coppell, sam allardyce, damien richardson and steve staunton bow to your superior knowledge.

Is Damien Delaney or Paddy McCarthy injured? Surely either player is a better bet than Murphy or Bennett? What about Andy O'Brien? Is Peter Murphy a better option than Andy O'Brien? The call ups don't make much sense to me.

Didn't Zigic score twice a week later against a team including Bennett?

yes, paired with the frankly-stretching-my-policy-of-avoiding-direct-criticism-of-city-players Brian O'Callaghan and killian lordan rather than dan murray and danny murphy and without mssr joe gamble in front of him. lets just say it is not for nothing that "big" sam left after 70 minutes of the city-red star match saying he'd much rather pay the 12 million for bennett if he was 20 instead of 26.

zigic has since gone on to average a goal every second game for Racing Santander in La Liga.

So yes, i take issue with the idea that bennett would somehow be troubled by the presence of ken oman or graham gartland.

It's gone well beyond the stage of "but he's better than X and X is in the squad.
There's no analysing Stans selections.

 i saw him more than once ;) just using examples someone with less knowledge on the subject might recognise.

Drogheda were asked by the FAI to release Gartland on Friday morning for the games but as the Eircom league wouldn't postpone to-nights game they rejected it.

With O'Shea out, Kilbane now has twice as many caps as the rest of the squad added together :D :D

Cork City postponed the home game against Bray next friday. The again we have 3 backup players with the 4 Nations squad. With injuries we can't field a 5 man bench even including the young U21 players in our squad.
