If any of you can pick up UTV, you may be interested to know that they are broadcasting a half hour programme on the 'Detroit Cougars' (essentially Glentoran FC who made up one-of-twelve teams in the 1967 US Pro-League - Shamrock Rovers were another) right after the Champions League Final next week.

Plenty of old grainy footage and a few of the Cougars reminiscing 40 years on in a television studio.

Cheers

I'll have to set the Sky+ for that. I read a little about the Cougars on a Glens website a few years ago, and it seemed very interesting.

If I'm not at home I'll put the PC on timer recording. It will include the ads and stuff so may be a bit too big. I'll give it a shot anywho!

Yes. May-June-July 1967, so out-of-season.

Actually played each other twice.

Never realised Rovers travelled that far for a 'home'

I have the timer recording set so if the game goes to ET then that's the end of that!

For what's its worth Ben Hannigan and Eric Barber (both then with shels were happy enough to share our 'home' and guested for us in 1967. I guess they were happy enough to be go since there was no invitation given to Shels or any other LOI club...quelle surpris :D.

From what I have been told, the Irish League invite went to Linfield initially who declined because it involved playing on a Sunday.

That is correct according to a Glentoran website as well.

You know what they say. Keep your friends close but your enemies closer ;)

Nah if you look further up this thread there is a post from a Glentoran site that tells you about the Cougars.

I have it recorded - seems like the CL coverage went on longer than what was advertised. I'm missing the last few minutes but I'll upload it tomorrow.
