AFAIK 2nd plays 3rd over two legs with the winners playing 2nd bottom in the Premier over two legs

winner goes up

2nd plays 3rd in a two leg playoff

winner of 2nd vs 3rd plays second last in premier in a two leg playoff with the winner playing in the premier for the 2008 season

2nd in First Division plays 3rd in a one-legged play-off (at home of team that finishes in second place). Winner of this plays the team second last in Premier in two-legged final.

Don't ask me why the 2nd v 3rd play-off is just one-legged, but this is per FAI Fixture list.

PLAY-OFF SERIES – SEMI FINAL
TBC First Division runners-up v Third in First Division

PLAY-OFF SERIES – FINAL FIRST LEG
TBC Winner of semi-final v Eleventh in Premier Division

PLAY-OFF SERIES – FINAL SECOND LEG
TBC Eleventh in Premier Division v Winner of semi-final

Winner of play-off series either gains or retains Premier Division status as appropriate.

So, for argument's sake, you could have Cobh and Dundalk 15 points ahead of 3rd place Limerick with Cobh finishing top on goal difference on the last day of the season. Then a couple of days later, a jaded Dundalk go out on penalties following a 0-0 draw at Oriel Park.

LOCK UP YOUR PETROL CANS!!!

Never been a fan of having a playoff between teams from two divisions, stands to reason that the odds are stacked against the team from the lower division and just smacks of trying to keep the status quo in place

Is it foot.ies new policy that jokes about Limerick FC, Galway's water supply and Cork being ridden rock solid have to be included in every thread? :p

If a club was really smart they would forgo promotion this season for next season as anybody going up will find difficult to stay up as three will be going down and only one going up. (does that make sense)

Actually in 1683 we were called Limerick Slashers

A scrappy 185 a side game was snatched at the death when Sir John Blood made off with their village clock

Is it in the new rules that the bottom two apply for "re-election"?

What does this process entail? I'm looking at you passerrby (;) )or maybe Raheny Red could tell me next November? :D

Ask any old time Bohs fans, Bohs have had to apply for re-election more than anyone else

Dundalk beating Waterford last year does go to show that the top teams in the 1st are more then a match for the bottom teams in the Premier. We also beat Waterford last week so only advantage Premier side has is that they know what they have to do at home in 2nd leg.

Come off it, the only record we hold in the League of Ireland and you want to take it off us?

I'm not sure you can take last season's meaningless game as an indicator bearing in mind several of the Waterford players were allowed to head off on holidays instead of playing the match.

nice try big mac !! at that stage you had no idea if you needed the extra few few points for the IAG final shake up - waterford def played to win this tie - infact you needed to win it more than us, as we had zero chance of making the cut due to seasons 03 + 04.

nobody told maxi !

The previous season - 2005 - the First Division club beat the Premier Club as well. Dublin City beat Shamrock Rovers. Will it be a hat-trick in 2007??

Officially, everyone had to be re-elected for this season I think. No idea what the process is for the next few seasons until they get the A league up and running.
