View Full Version : Conor Sammon to Leeds?
Poor Student

When I was stocking up on sandwiches and tea in the hospitality area at half time I overheard Dennis Wise chatting to another lad. They were noting that Sammon holds the ball up well and if he continued to play that way in the second half it was worth coming to check him out. Is he a replacement for David Healy? Given Leeds relegation and Sammo's solid performance today he could be for the off. It would be amusing given how often we castigate him.

He's been a real handful for our defenders in the last two years at the Brandywell. Stood out as someone who can really hold the ball up and looks extremely fit.

Just on the Pat's forum, where someone mentioned they should put in a bid for him. My reply - "Sammon's a hugely frustrating player - great strength, good poacher, but can't head the ball to save his life and his first touch is often loose. Paul Byrne, on the other hand, is possibly the best forward we've ever had at UCD."
Sammo's a good player, but not a great one. Paul Byrne is a far more rounded striker, and I can't understand why so many people see so much in Sammo! Still, if we get cash, I won't complain, and always good to see a player moving up.

Random comparison time, by the way -
Sammon - 11 goals in 55 games
Byrne - 12 goals in 36 games
Purcell - 2 goals in 12 games (probably to early to really put him in, but anyways)
Sammon - 4317 minutes, 11 goals (goal every 392 minutes, or every 4.3 full games)
Byrne - 1886 minutes, 12 goals (goal every 157 minutes, or every 1.75 full games)
Purcell - 383 minutes, 2 goals (goal every 191 minutes, or every 2.1 full games)

PLaying up front is only about scoring goals. I know you've seen more of him so I'm not disagreeing with you either.
I've always been impressed with Sammon though.
Was Wise there to look at him specifically?

Disagree there. Having a striker that can hold up the ball, keep possesion and bring other players into play, while chipping in with a few goals is just as important as having a natural goalscorer IMO. Obviously you would have to have a striker that can score to play alongside him, which we have. We definitely wouldn't have finished top 6 without Sammon last year.

I assume you mean it's not only about scoring goals? That's in my first post anyway.

In the Sun today that Stoke and Leeds are interested.
So Poor Student tells me...
Leeds United and Stoke City are on the trail of UCD striker Connor Sammon. Sammon, 20, caught the eye of Leeds boss Dennis Wise when he watched UCD draw 2-2 with St. Pats in May. Wise has watched him twice since, most recently the 1-1 draw between the same teams Monday night, and is now ready to make a move for the striker.
But Leeds face stiff competition from Championship outfit Stoke City as their scouts have recommended him to manager Tony Pulis. Sammon made his UCD debut against Cork City in April 2005, just days before his 18th birthday and has netted 10 times in 37 appearances. He is out of contract at the end of the season but UCD would be due compensation as he is under the age of 23.

57 appearances. Still he's not being watched for his goalscoring exploits. We should try and keep on to him for as long as possible.

Sammon has played two seasons now and to me it doesn't look like his heading has got any better, surely he realises how poor he is in the air for a big bloke. He is big and awkward and he does cause defenders problems but he just doesnt have the end product. He reminds me of a young Bambi, its like he cant control his body never mind the ball.
For me Byrne is the best forward UCD have, the question is will he ever be fit.

From today's Times:
"His form has attracted interest from a couple of English clubs. Stoke City's people have been along to Belfield to watch him on a handful of occasions, while Dennis Wise has been tracking his progress since coming to see Mark Quigley play against the students only to be more impressed by the former Malahide United man."

Paul Byrne is obviously UCD's answer to Cork City's John O'Flynn. Scores when he's fit. But how often is he fit?

Stoke were watching him (sit in the stands) again on Monday, and have been in almost every single game this season.

Sammo - don't mind Stoke or Leeds - if you score 2 on sunday, Athletico Bilbao will be back on.....

Athletic Bilbao would be a better move. La Liga is a far higher standard than what is let's face it the 3rd Division in England ( Leeds United).

Sammo isn't going to Athletic Bilbao, FFS. May as well argue Barca'd be a better move.

Someone else mentioned Bilbao I was only saying it's a better move if it comes up than Leeds.

Irrelevant. They mentioned it as a joke. Leeds have at least been linked by someone who wasn't joking.

this being the same Bilbao who only sign Basque players :)

UCD could be playing in Europe next season. Leeds are at least 7 years away from Europe.
Players and the game here in general is far too Anglo/Scottish centric anyways. One of the reasons why Irish players at all levels including international football can't pass water let alone a football !

For the love of Pete... could you two knock it off?
I made up the Bilbao thing months ago. It's utter nonsense. Can we go back to having a thread please?

Agreed a deal with Derry, according to the BBC (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/irish/7119623.stm), although the club haven't heard anything official yet. Looks like he'll go, but we could well have a Darren Quigley situation again.
