its about time our mc used our link with celtic
to get players
what with willie mcstay sean fallon and bro winfried
we must surely have a connection
also a few game wont go a stray with our need for money
so come on lets get behind this and get the mc to open their eyes
other clubs would do the same

unfortunately such a link wont get us a celtic friendly. rovers have tried for years to set something up but it's not as straight forward as you'd think. friendlies for clubs like celtic (man u, liverpool et al) involve going on tours these days as its lucrative for them to do so. it would take some effort on celtics behalf to make this happen and i cant see it.

look at galway. they're setting up a game with sunderland who have never been talked about so much before. now that's being on the ball in terms of friendly set-ups.

Sadly and realistically Celtic are a business and whilst there have been ties with sligo all the emotional attachment comes from the sligo side and not the celtic side. Celtic have never done irish teams any favours in the past and have always viewed ireland in terms of cheap harvesting of players and marketing opportunities. Getting british teams like celtic and liverpoool and even sunderland usually involves a club having to guarantee a minimum of £25k sterling and a large insurance bill and any extra expense and is far more efficient for dublin teams than provincial ones to arrange for obvious reasons. There have been cases of EL teams losing money on these ventures due to a number of factors. I am not against the idea but it is not a financial panacea!

That said i still watch for cletics results and go to the odd game etc.

How about a Celtic Select V a Sligo Rovers Select. A legends game if you know what i mean. The likes of jackie mcNamara and packie for celtic and whoever ye want for the sligo team. it would be way cheaper and should still guarantee a full house.

the ex-pros would probably do it for damn all with just the opportunity of a jolly over the summer!

Yeah, but are there 11 Celtic legends whereas we wouldn't know who to leave out.

getting the big sides like Celtic,Man Utd, Liverpool etc. are almost impossible but why not target the likes of Reading (large Irish Contingenet) ,Leeds (well supported in Ireland) ,Bolton,Shefield Utd, Birmingham,Burnley......

Valencia are coming to Dublin for a training camp in late July or early August. We should try and get them down for a game, no doubt that would sell out.

Boca Juniors should be flying over sligo in the summer, on there way to some friendly games in Europe. I wonder would anybody have any ideas how to bring down the plane in Standhill ? I suppose we get Carews to have a bus ready to get them in the Showgrounds on the double.

It would need to Standhill as if it went over the other side of the bay they would be in Maugherow and lets face it boys nobody is going to have the balls go there to collect them.

I hope there are no Maugheruugians on here reading that RT or else you'll have to watch your back. Dead man walking!! :D

There was talk at the begining of the season that Celtic were gonna play us, Harps and Derry all in the same week - havent heard anything about that since then however.

The closest we've got to a friendly since McStay was when Boyle was chosen to play in the Celtic first team against Motherwell (i think) but a call came through while they were on the bus to say the game was called off due to bad weather. He never played for the first team after that either. There was a clause in the sale contract to say that we got an automatic frendy against Celtic if he had had.

I think there is one top-flight club we have a greater connection with than any other.

And this is a long shot but just as long as celtic and whoever else you want to mention.

Fulham, without the Rovers they may not have the manager they currnetly have, and Lawrie has a bit of a soft spot for the old LOI considering what he gained from his time in Sligo.

Maybe the club should give him a buzz.
