Now make it a treble: Jeffrey
Monday, May 07, 2007
Linfield manager David Jeffrey has told Bluemen to get ready for another day of celebrations next Saturday as the newly-crowned JJB Sports Irish Cup winners prepare for the next stage of their terrific treble attempt.
The Blues sealed a league and cup double for the second season in a row on Saturday with a penalty shoot-out win over Dungannon Swifts and now they are gearing up for the visit north of Drogheda United in the Setanta Sports Cup final this week.
And Jeffrey is planning on leading his men to yet more glory and becoming all Ireland champions for the second time in three years.
"We will be up for it next week, don't worry," he said.
"This is a funny place to be at. You strive and strive and strive to achieve and once you do that you're looking for the next thing.
"That's just the attitude we have at Linfield. We'll be back in training on Tuesday and you make no mistake, we want to be champions of 32 counties."
And it's clear to see just why Jeffrey is so fired up for the battle for all Ireland supremacy.
"I'm sick sore and tired of the hallions down south slagging us off, particularly that crowd from Cork," he seethed.
"They are the most ungracious group of people that I have ever met in my life, especially Joe Gamble.
"What annoys me is the ungracious big-headed attitude of them. They are an absolute joke and I'll tell you; Cork are absolutely nowhere, they've done nothing and they're pathetic."

Its kind of comforting to have a Linfield Manager slag you off.
Good on him. Missed out a chance to say molested though

No i was referring to the anti-cork bias on here.
Not that we care, its better to be talked about than not talked about at all!
We are in yer heads!!!

Knob!! Hope Drogheda paste them in the final now!!

The anti-Cork bias of a board where 1 in 5 posters are Cork (http://foot.ie/poll.php?do=showresults&pollid=383) supporters, or the anti-Cork bias that censors other people's slang terms for **** whoops, Cork?

Excellent word. And I thought the same thing when I saw it earlier today, which brings up an intriguing point -
Coincidence...?

A decent ad for the Irish League overall though. Don't forget - Welsh version is on today (Sunday) at 4pm on S4C (Channel 135 on ROI Sky). Should be easier to listen to commentary in Cymraeg than those 2 hallions on the BBC....

So is DJ saying that all Southern clubs and their fans fit this bill? Don't remember anyone else having a go at them.
Probably just trying to get his team into an us vs. the world mentality for the game.

Well, if anything, his rant has ensured the continuation of the Setanta Cup for another year or so.

"What annoys me is the ungracious big-headed attitude of them. They are an absolute joke and I'll tell you; Cork are absolutely nowhere, they've done nothing and they're pathetic."
Isn't that what most people think of Cork as a county and Joe Gamble as a person anyway?

No he was talking about Cork City
First of all there is no way 1 in 5 regular posters here are CCFC fans as almost none of them around here anymore.
I thought it so funny that so many people looked up the word hallion/hellion as I was doing the same thing.
One note to Mr. Jeffreys - Drogs also think your a small time clubs so make sure your players take it out on them :D :p

I was sure this was a **** take when i saw that first message but if he did say it more power to him. It certainly makes more sense than the misinformed rant of the sorest loser in a team full of sore losers. Linfield have the been the best team in the setanta cup in the three years, fact.

Hallion is a very commonly used derogatory term used regularly in the north. I'm surprised it made the dictionary. As rants go, not bad, but Rico is in a league of his own DJ, you really can't compete with the Corkies and their rants!

D'oh - rumbled !! You know the 'first rule of Linfield Football Club', Jerry.... :D
A petty and unnecessary rant from Jeffreys there. Gamble obviously got to him. He's been seething all week, and even though Cork aren't at the Final he felt the need to have a leftfield rant at them 7 days after he had his initial say ! Rattled....
Perhaps he's been paying too much attention to the Special Needs One over at Chelsea.
Guess what his motivational speech on Saturday will revolve around. the whole disrespect/them versus us angle might be enough to make the difference.
P.S. Have you lot geneuinely never heard the word 'hallion' before ? It's usually used in reference to big oafs from the country (i.e. Jeffrey's with a Tyrone acent). Yee boys need to get north a bit more... :)

"We want to be champions of 32 counties" - Respect to DJ for that!
Despite my family's Belfast Celtic background, I wish them all the best in the Setanta, this year. Passionate fans, good football and a passionate trainer, what more could you want?
I've seen idiots here giving out about them having supporters who are loyalist. What's with that? Have you any idea where Linfield come from?

In fairness the ungracious reaction of City to defeat to Linfield has brought this slight overreaction from Jeffrey.
Also Jeffrey is sensibly trying to wind up his players and fans before the final. He has had Linfield really well prepared for almost every game they've played in the setanta.

What a classic!! Would love to hear it booming from the stands in next seasons setanta v linfield!!!
It would show a 'sense of humour' and a small bit of 'taking yerselves less seriously' that was sadly missing from Gamble's rant last week! Although how can a man who molests football take himself lightly? :D

Linfield tickets are going very quickly.
The Kop stand which holds 4000, had only a few hundred tickets left(effectively yesterday was the first day on sale)
So I would expect the stand to sell out today or tomorrow morning. Our tickets look set to sell out completely.
We are expecting Drogs to sell out the Bottom deck of the North stand which holds 3000. Hopefully Drogs will be able to do that and maybe put a thousand or two on the top deck(which holds 3800)
So I would expect around the 10,000 mark.

Drogs will do well to sell out the bottom deck. Going by the crowds they have brought in the past I don't expect much. Maybe worse than Dungannon? We will sell out, or be very close to it, as usual though.

Although how can a man who molests football take himself lightly? :DAnyone that supports an EL team needs a sense of humour. At CCFC we have but a minority without the ability to laugh. Especially at a rather large Northern chap with a bald head and a red face.
Joe had just cost us the match 10 minutes before that interview and was obviously allergic to Mr Happy Pills questioning, leave him be.

Drogs should bring a bigger crowd than their last 2 games at Windsor, which were midweek night games in fairness.
Saturday at 5.00pm seems an ideal time for a lot of Drogs to travel. I know they've a special train booked.
Hope there's a big crowd and a decent atmosphere

They brought around a 1000 to Windsor last time if I remember, so that's why I'm expecting them to bring 3 or 4000 this time.
Hopefully the crowd will be the biggest yet in the final.

If you mean the Fields of Bishopstown which we sing at every game we play then Im sorry we offended their sensitivities about us playing in Bishopstown
Ffs half the city fans would probably join in with a chorus of we are the billy boys...theres been enough renditions of it on our buses to **** off the celtic heads

just to clarify, here are the lyrics:
Low lie the fields of Bishopstown,
Where once we watched the Cork City play,
Billy Woods was on the wing (City)
We had dreams and songs to sing (Turners Cross)
Its so lonely round the fields of Bishopstown
Its sung at every single City game i have ever been to and there is absolutley no sectarian element to it whatsoever

Just for reference-
Words of 'The Sash'
For its here I am an Orangeman, just come across the sea
For singing and for dancing, I hope that I'll please thee,
I can sing or dance with any man
As I did in days of yore
And its on the Twelfth I long to wear the Sash my Father wore.
Chorus
It is old but it is beautiful. Its colours they are fine
It was worn at Derry, Aughrim, Enniskillen and the Boyne
My Father wore it as a youth in the bygone days of yore
And its on the Twelfth I long to wear, the Sash my Father wore.
For it's now I'm going to leave you, good luck to you I'll say
And when I'm on the ocean deep, I hope for me you'll pray
I'm going to my native land, to a place they call Dromore
Where on the Twelfth I long to wear the Sash my Father wore.
Chorus
Whenever I come back again my brethren here to see
I hope to find old Orange style, they will always welcome me
My favourite tune's "Boyne Water", but to please me more and more
And make my Orange heart full glad with the Sash my Father wore.
Chorus
And our National Anthem
1
God save our gracious Queen,1
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen:
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us:
God save the Queen.
2
O Lord, our God, arise,
Scatter her enemies,
And make them fall.
Confound their politics,
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix,
God save us all.
3
Thy choicest gifts in store,
On her be pleased to pour;
Long may she reign:
May she defend our laws,
And ever give us cause
To sing with heart and voice
God save the Queen
Nothing in the slightest way sectarian :D
