Under 12 Inter-League
A.D.S.L 1 - 0 Kildare league
The growing reputation of the A.D.S.L at inter-league level was further enhanced on Sunday last with a polished skilful performance by its youngest representative side.
The score-line hardly does justice to a game largely dominated by the Athlone lads playing a brand of neat incisive passing football that had the visitors under pressure for most of the game.
Athlone took the lead midway through the first half when a Sean Barnicle corner was only half cleared. The ball fell to the Willow winger on the edge of the box where he hit a lovely curling shot into the far corner to his teammates delight.
Ian Coffey and Darragh Lennon also went close to extending the lead but found the Kildare keeper in inspiring form. The second half saw Kildare come more into the game and keeper Ronan Farrell had to be alert to some long-range efforts.
The back four of James Dolan, Jay Dean Nicell, Mark McCallon and the versatile John Egan were in outstanding form throughout restricting the Kildare side to just two shots from distance.
Midfielders Kevin Dunne and Robert Egan combined well together and rarely wasted possession. Sean Barnicle, John Warde and Eric Farrell all worked the wings well.
Ian Coffey and Darragh Lennon looked sharp and on another day could have had a brace apiece. Ciaran Martin did really well when introduced using his strength to hold possession and press for a place in the starting line up against the North Dublin League in their next encounter.
