hmmm it depends really, i mean i think some on here are being very loose with "their" idea of a riff.

Some songs have great "riffs", but are not great songs. anyhow some of mine would be:

Anto, thats a class one by rory gallagher alright, like any proper riff, the guitar is prominent throughout and extremely catchy. Thats what good riffs are all about, not necessarily really classy guitart playing as such.

im sure there is more to be added there, but thats a start. If you mean riff being the main power chords the song is built around ( which is what a riff is essentially ) not just a couple of bars by the lead guitarist, then some of the above are worth a listen to.

Shred guitar is a good example of this. In music, a riff is an ostinato figure: a repeated chord progression, pattern or melodic figure, often played by the rhythm section instruments, that forms the basis or accompaniment of a musical composition (Usually rock music, Latin, Funk or jazz, but also occasionally classically orchestrated music, Ravel's Boléro being an obvious example). They can be as simple as repeated saxophone honking an entire chorus on a single exciting note by Big Jay McNeely or as complex as the head arrangements played by the Count Basie Orchestra.

As Lionel, once said to me, you are using wikipedia as a reference, laughable!!!! :D

in fairness it doesnt really say a lot there, from that "anything" could be construed as a riff.....

in terms of sax/thrombones etc certainly a style of riff is possible, but i dont think if you asked the average joe, would they consider it a "riff", their answer would be no.

BTW, does anyone know what the term "playing the thrombone" means not in a musical parlance.

I remember he was a bit of a running joke between meself and a mate years ago when we were faffing about learning the guitar. The fact his first name was apparently 'Whingey' only added to it.
But mainly the fact that his fretboard w@nkery broke all boundaries. Talk about a triumph of style over substance! A chap who's idea of musical proficiency is apparently to try and cram as many notes as he can into a given time period is a tw@t. And he made an album called 'Concerto for Electric Guitar' or something so he's a pretentious tw@t as well. :D

Also, yeah, am aware of the phrase 'tromboning' but in a context that perhaps makes it wise that I stop here, being as it's an open forum and all... :cool:
BTW your use of a superfluous 'h' in 'trombone' in this context is vaguely unsettling! :D
