This is up and running now, so I'm going to try and keep track of things here as usual.

Portlaoise and Ballinasloe drew 3-3 last night. We played in Bray this morning - won 3-2, with Forsyth, O'Sullivan and Purcell all on the mark. Athlone v Longford and Pat's v Kildare are tomorrow.

Any idea of the line up?

pineapple stu
23/06/2007, 11:29 PM
Nope.

For what it's worth, the Shield table was as follows, with our result against Shels the only one missing -

Team P W D L F A GD Pts
Rovers 5 3 1 1 8 5 3 10
Bray 5 2 3 0 12 8 4 9
Pat's 5 2 1 2 4 6 -2 7
Bohs 5 2 1 2 8 13 -5 7
UCD 4 1 2 1 9 4 5 5
Shels 4 0 0 4 1 6 -5 0
If we assume we beat Shels, we came third, a point off qualifying for the semis. Rovers and Bray ended up in the final, which seems to imply the top teams will again come from the usual areas.

Reigning league champions Salthill lost 2-0 to Galway today as well. Cork lost 3-1 to Limerick. Could be an open season elsewhere.

Other results from Leinster B this weekend -

Portlaoise 3-3 Ballinasloe
Pat's 4-0 Kildare

Bray 1 0 0 1 2 3 -1 0

Yeah 4. Should be comfortable enough.

Beat Ballinasloe 8-0 this afternoon. Target practice, apparently. Forsyth got 4, Fitzgerald got 2, O'Sullivan got 1 and Ronan Finn got one too. He could well feature on Monday.

Longford v Bray and Athlone v Pat's on Sunday. Port Laoise v Kildare on Monday.

pineapple stu

Athlone 0-3 Pat's

Playing St Pat's on Saturday in the Enda McGuill. Nasty draw, especially in the First Round.

Pineapple given we have almost half of the 21's going to the World Student Games, will we be postponing U 21 games left right and centre during the competition in Thailand next month?

Valid point, I suppose.

Still, it's only two games I think, and we have to let some other teams win too.

We only need to finish in the top four of the group anyway so I'm sure we'll be OK.

Any idea of the line up?A bit late but the line-up for the Bray game was: Darren Quigley; David Last, Evan McMillan, Brian Shortall, Killian Gallagher; James O'Sullivan, Brian King, Greg Bolger, Fran Moran; Timmy Purcell, Darren Forsyth. All bar Moran have played in the first team this year.

Twas. Pats are no mugs, have a few underage internationals. Just shows the strength of our team. Anything other than a league title this year isn't acceptable imo.

Well if the playoff system is in place this year than failure is acceptable as on any given night anything can happen.

Furthermore you don't need to qualify the statement with "imo" as it already clearly is your opinion, it's just another term that is ruining the English language.

(CTID/pineapple stu will now comment on how they want to destroy the English language).

Not true. The U-21 league employs a playoff system. Look at the US sports and see how often the No.1 team wins the playoffs. We should finish top two in our conference but it's madness to talk of what is and isn't acceptable at underage. The primary goal of the U-21 setup is to produce player capable of progressing on and to give them experience.

I know anything can happen on the night but a poor performance shouldn't be excused just because it's a one-off.

It says Belfield Park but I don't know if that's right. It'll be either Belfield Park or the Foster's Avenue pitch anyway so it wouldn't take much effort to check both.

Aertel says we beat Athlone 2-0 yesterday. Angus did text me telling me we were 2-0 up and Athlone were down to 10 men. Bray drew 2-2 with Portlaoise yesterday. Pat's v Ballinalsoe and Kildare v Longford were postponed.

Angus
16/07/2007, 6:56 AM
Yes, 2 - 0 and a decent standard of game.

It was effectively over as a contest when Athlone went down to 10 men. Our firsty goal was from the 7, Tony Doyle and the second was directly from a free kick from the 8.

We should have had a hatful and were caught offside 10 - 12 times in the second half. Notable performances from Evan McMillen and Fitzgerald when he came on but the stand out performance for me was from the 2 the right full back, Declan O'Donnell.

Top drawer - strong in ther air, flawless on the ground, excellent positioning (except for getting caught once in the second half).

This is the first game I have seen but the pattern is similiair to the seniors - solid defence, lots of effort but a disconnect between solid midfield play and actually creating chances.

Greg Bolger got the second.

Decent performance last night. 3 - 1 against Kildare. I only saw the last 20 minutes of the first half and the first 20 of the second and saw our goals.

Kildare have a few nice players and certainly deserved a goal - not sure if they deserved a point - I think our boys were probably too strong. The 6, the 7 and the 8 for KIldare looked lively and the big lad up front looked decent.

Best for us in the period I saw were Timmy, Kinger, Declan O'Donnell, Killian, McWalter.

Sully scored the first - a volley from the edge of the 6 yard box after good work down the left by Podge, having been released by a super move involving Timmy and Killian. The second was a bullet header from Kinger after a super corner. The third, I think, came as a deflection off Timmy.

McWalter was taken off shortly after half time and was replaced by Fitzy. Not sure if this has relevance for Friday.

The word last night was that McFaul has a hamstring and not a hip injury - don't know reliability of source.
