Had an enjoyable, drunken discussion about this last night that went on for over an hour without anyone agreeing to what is the best TV theme tune of all time,

For me it's a close call between Taxi and Red Dwarf, with a honourable mention for Hill Street Blues, but since I'm in a more enegetic mood today I'll go for Red Dwarf

I've got to go old school here and choose Hawaii Five-O (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EgHced1hpBk&mode=related&search=). Here's the actual TV intro (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5r0-z5ZtsaI).

"Book'em Danno":D

Doctor Who...but then again, I'm a Sci-Fi geek!!! Or you know what else was great, the original Grange Hill music! I still hum it sometimes when I do something wrong!

There are few other good ones. Grandstand, the Sunday Game, Sports Report (though that's radio)

Sport -
The BBC's Snooker theme tune,
Saint and Greavsie
RTE's Sports Stadium moved into the world of cool in 1984 when they adopted "The Final Countdown" as their theme tune. :D

Others

The Addams Family theme tune. (original series was repeated on Channel 4 during the 80's).

As a kid I thought Knightrider, The Fall Guy, the A-Team, Space 1999 were Coooooooool!!!!! theme tunes.

Comedy

Newman and Baddiel - In Pieces had a good theme tune for their series in the 90's. Think the Sundays recorded it.

The Mary Whitehouse Experience had a good one as well.

I suppose you have to concede that the Late Late Show's theme tune is instantly linked with the show.

Ive always liked the old BBC Sport Cricket theme tune! TV theme tunes,

Used that music for a Gymnastics routine one time. Quality!

I love the theme from I Am Weasel (hence my signature!) "You dont need pants for the victory dance, Baboon is better than weasel, I R baboon is the star of the show, I AM WEASEL"

Also loved Worzel Gummidge when was a kid, my bro has just bought the box set so must watch it.

My current fav tv tune (and programme) is Veronica Mars...."we used to be friends, a long time ago, we used to be friends"

All the BBC sports ones were better than ITVs. Cricket, Formula One and the now sadly replaced Grandstand theme, which was the theme music to my teenage saturdays, not to mention Match of The Day.
The Sunday Game theme aint bad either.
As for other stuff, The A Team, Dallas, Original Star trek, Beverly Hillbillies, I dream of Jeannie, The X Files, Tales of the Unexpected, The Twighlight Zone, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Cheers and Frasier.

The Royle Family, 'Half the World Away', one of Oasis's best tracks. have to say the BBC sport theme tunes were always memorable! Ski Sunday was one too, although i never watched it... same with Wimbledon. how RTE ditched the SUnday Game theme tune is beyond me. Twin Peaks had a great opening tune, which Moby nicked for his tune Go...

It was actually the closing tune, also known as Laura's theme, that he sampled. It's remarkable how familiar people are with the sample as it's not used in the tune that much yet everyone remembers that part more than the main piano piece.

I've never seen that show magicme but if that's the Dandy Warhols' tune then this is an automatic winner. That is one brilliant song, way too good for TV.

On another note (see what I did there?) the cricket music is a cracking tune called Soul Bossa Nova by Quincy Jones' band. Can't move with bloody producers trying to be pop stars these days! Wish they'd just stop! :D

I think you'll find the classic BBC cricket theme tune (if that's what you're talking about) is Booker T & the MG's 'Soul Limbo'.

Other good ones not mentioned yet:
Streets of San Francisco
Jack Ass (Minutemen song)
Cheers

And the Wallace & Gromit theme tune.

Austin Powers, cricket, easy to mix them up I guess. OK maybe not. :D

Liked the theme song 'sent in by a viewer' for Ricky Gervais' chat show series.
Ricky Gervais, he's a star, but he's only got one car.
One car! One Car! One Car! One Car! One Car! One Car! One Car! One Car!
