I remember hearing Van Basten talking about taking penalties. He was saying that the good keepers will study your body shape as you approach the ball, and what he used to do was fairly simple - run up as if to stick it (say)right, then last second turn his foot the other way and roll it left, ending up with the body shape of a player striking a ball in one direction but with just his foot turned in to stick it the other side.
Seemed to work alot or him as I recall...
Apart from the Euro 92 semi final of course.

Look out for Kevin Doyle's penalty for Reading yesterday: firmly struck, top left corner, basically unstoppable, even if the keeper goes the right way.
Or Ronaldo for MU vs Boro a wee while back (after he was "fouled" by Boateng): firmly struck, top right corner, equally unstoppable.
I simply don't understand why more penalty takers don't emulate this style.

i agree hit it low and hard or high and hard into the zones where it is hard for a keeper to reach . fellas who hit them close to the keeper should never be let near the penalty spot again!!

Not sure if it was top corner but he scored and he also had to put up with Stelios antics of bursting the balloon as he took the peno.
