A modern day miracle!

Coming home from a barbie in my Bro's house in Duleek last Sunday afternoon, I decided to go get some hangover cures in the form of crisps & diet 7up in the Costcutters. While in there I spotted a plastic cup with "spicy lentil soup" written on it and decided to buy this as it was a self-heating cup!

I was amazed & brought it home with me & looked at it for a few days b4 (with the kids to witness it) I decided to go for it!

Basically you turn it upside down, push the bottom til it pops and shake & it heats the soup! Unreal! Ingenious! Will be stocking up on these for camping trips all summer.

Anyone else come across these yet?

A lot of outdoor pursuit places have these. You can get full dinners aswell as soups. Never used them though.

Cool. I came up with an idea for self cooling cans for a science project basically there was a device attached to the bottom of the can containing two chemicals in separate compartments that when mixed reacted to give an instant cooling affect on anything they are in contact with separated by a water tight plastic seal which could be removed by pulling a tab and hey presto Ice cold beer/coke or whatever. could never get the damn thing developed into anything more than an Idea though

Wow...thats basically what these are only that its water mixing with a chemical (cant rem the name) to create heat.

Dont be in many outdoor pursuits places Noby so never saw them b4 but must start looking out for them!

AFAIK there's a similar type thing used for warming your hands, working off the same principal.

Yeah have seen those hand warmer thingys alright.

those hand warmer thingys are called "Cairo" here in Japan. People use all the time, not just in winter. Again, you just crush it up in your hands and two chemicals react to create heat. Some of them actually get too hot to hold at times.

My medical kits at work contain something similar for treating swelling/burns/scalds. it's a sachet about the size of a tayto bag with a sub-divide between crystals and a catalyst (water?) -give the bag a hard thump to break the divide and it's ice cold in no time. Never thought of it's pragmatic application to the problem of chilling beer ...and trust me I think of little else. That's ingenious. Half of a dozen of them going in the picnic hamper and fcuk the burned, scalded, sprained....

Have used the Chemical ice packs - I had started to rupture my achilles tendon doing a Gold training trip for the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme - was given them when we got back to the camp site in complete agony.
They are a brilliant idea.

Yeah have used the ice packs myself when had a dodgy knee. Used a knee support banadage to strap it in place so could get on with things!

Well I was very pleased to have them on the 4 hour mini bus journey from Wales back to London! Think they are great.

Well not quite modern day according to Wikipedia, they have been around since 1900 apparently, apparently the heat is produced from mixing quicklime with water. Sounds potentially dangerous if the quicklime were to get into the food though.
