A goal a piece from strikers Warren Parkes and Gary Devine earned Athlone Town their first win of the season against lowly Kilkenny City, after five attempts.

Athlone went into this game four points behind Dundalk, but knowing that a win for Kilkenny would leave them only two points behind Athlone, with a game in hand. This was a must win game.

The two goals came in a three minute period in the second half, with Parkes scoring in the 58th minute. It was his first goal for the Club since his hat-trick against Dundalk in Oriel Park in late September.

Devine followed this up three minutes later netting his second goal in three games, after going 17 games without scoring once. All Town fans will be happy to see him finally scoring as the young Clara man has given his all throughout the season.

Kilkenny did manage to get a goal back in the 70th minute, leaving for a nervous final 20 minutes. Athlone managed to hold on however, and secured a very important three points in the quest to avoid re-election.

Monaghan United are the visitors to Saint Mel's Park next Friday 17th January 2003 in the final home game of the season.
