My mate and an I are arguing here in college about gaining a passport in a foreign country. Our question is how long must you be resident in a country to gain a passport for that country which you reside in? Links would be appreciated ;) :cool:

if i am correct, to get a passport you need to become a citizen, which makes it a naturalisation issue. And, again, if I am correct, length of time needed for naturalisation depends on each country.

The length of time is inversely proportional to the amount of money donated to the government. I think.

Rules are different for different countries, here in Ireland I think you have to be here for 5 years before applying for citizenship but it also depends on your original country. UK would be similar.

It does NOT depend on your country of origin. Its five years "contributing" to the state. For this time spent as a full time student or applying for reguee status are not counted. As above, the process to become a naturalised irish citizen can start after 5 years and 1 day but may take some time.
