An organisation that shall remain nameless is currently writing to us regularly over content posted on Foot.ie, and there seems to be a distinct possibility that they might take it further at some point in the future; despite assurances that they're wrong, and we don't have any money. We're thinking of creating a fund to deal with this kind of eventuality, but would people actually donate do you think?

If its the nameless organisation I'm thinking of I reckon they would.

If said organisation is the organisation that I suspect it may be I'm sure many, myself included, could be persuaded to part with a few euro. :)
Even I would donate some money if it is indeed the organisation that I think it is.

I think that I think the same organisation as you do and I most certainly would cough up a small sum to help out.

Ginger Rights dot Org can protest all they like, there's no way that Nicola from Girls Aloud is getting into Totty Watch!
I'm prepared to go to court to defend my opinion that she's a minger! :D

We don't have good laws, in this country, when it comes to computer related matters so it would be very hard for anyone to be sure of their chances, before taking legal action against an Internet forum.
They'd be lucky to get a court order to have offending comments removed and an apology issued.
That said, I don't think there's any harm keeping the content in check, by insisting on proof to back up all allegations.

Count me in. It's actually something I've been thinking about since Maribor Kev came unstuck. I was going to suggest a general war chest to fight any unnamed organisation that may want to gag discussion but a foot.ie fund for foot.ie makes sense.

Thanks for the feedback folks, keep it coming.
I can neither confirm nor deny that the organisation in question is gingerrights.org. :)

I dont know bout any of you but I would hate if despite everything I tried to do right that people continued to slag me. I would try and stop people talkin bout me too.
And no.....am not ginger!
Yeah but what if certain people thing you didn't do it right. Surely they had a right to express that opinion on an independent platform made up of your best customers

And I see a whole army of my country men, here, in defiance of tyranny. You've come to fight as free men, and free men you are. What will you do with that freedom? Will you fight?

Count me in , freedom to express an opinion is something I will die for.

We'll keep that in mind. Given the price that human organs fetch, on the blackmarket, we may need to harvest your body for parts, to cover the cost of lengthy legal proceedings. :D

If it is who I think it is, yes for sure I'll contribute. And if not, well, yes anyway.
I think it's wrong that Dahamsta might have any liability for what's posted on here, any more than a publican is liable for a conversation in his pub, but while the law remains daft, I won't see him lose out to the particular shower of gombeens of whom I'm thinking.

A lot of similarities between the alleged organisations...

Is it so dangerous that we must refer to them without giving their name?
Given the internet is a relatively new means of communication, legally speaking, is there any precedent to follow?

Dahamsta seems eager not to name them, and whether it's on legal advice or not, I think we should respect that.

I think the laws of libel are a bit stronger than the Publican example you quoted.Something in print carries more weight than hear-say in a Pub etc.

Agreed, and I should be more responsible for what I write here than I am for something I say in a pub, but like the publican, Dahamsta is just enabling conversation, and I don't think it's fair to make him responsible for what I say here.

I'd be willing to part with some cash to protect on-line free speech relating to Irish football on the web.
I wonder are there are any legal types who read here regularly who be willing to do a bit of pro-bono work?

If it's the 3 letter organisation I'm thinking of, I'd be willing to support such a fund.
Just when you think the said organisation was gone for good they re-surface to cause mayhem, I think everyone on this forum has had a bad experience over the years from said organisation whether it be over priced tickets, delayed journey times or a narcissistic workforce....

Theres a lot of test cases waiting to happen. the libel laws are way out of date and really were not made with digital media in mind.
Anyway to be libel it would have to be untrue. If its the organisation we are all thinking of they haven't a leg to stand on and its about time someone stuck it to them.

OK - I'll setup a list in here later on tonight listing what people would be willing to contribute towards staving off the legal eagles.
A running total of sorts would be a useful thing to have to keep track of all this.
On the subject of this proposed "legal shoeing" by the overweight front row of the nameless ones - I've heard rumours from other sources confirming the worst.
This may get worse before it gets better...
